PETERSBURG, Fla.- After a tough defeat at the hands of the host Eckerd College Tritons on Friday evening the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team went back to work on Saturday afternoon as they took on Millersville University to close out their participation in the Eckerd College Classic. As they have done in eight of nine matches this season, the Sailfish won in three sets as they improve to 9-1.
With the victory on Saturday over Millersville, who are a NCAA Division II institution from Millersville, Pennsylvania, the Sailfish finished off the Eckerd College Classic with a 2-1 record after a win on Friday over UNC-Pembroke and the five set loss to Eckerd.
Junior outside-hitter Mariela Quesada made her case for All-Tournament team consideration by once again reaching double-digits in kills for the third straight match at the two-day tournament. The Costa Rica native led all players on Saturday with 12 kills while producing a solid .450 attacking percentage.
Christina Alessi produced eight kills in only 12 attacks (.583 attacking percentage) to add to Quesada’s damage while Alessi also added in two block assists.
Freshman Kelsey Fox was a perfect 3-for-3 in attacks as she chipped in off the PBA bench.
Becca Acevedo finished with 22 assists in the three-sets while also contributing four digs, two block assists, and one service ace. Senior Jessica Way added in 10 assists and six digs.
The team will take the remainder of the weekend off and will gear up for a busy upcoming week that witnesses the team host their 2011 home opener on Wednesday, September 14th against Ave Maria University and then hit welcome in Southeastern University on Friday, September 16th. Both matches will take place at the Rubin Arena beginning at 7 pm.Â
