Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla.- After two clean sweeps on Thursday during the opening day of the NCCAA National Tournament the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team improved their record to 3-0 during pool play with another win on Friday morning. Matched up against the No. 7-seed Asbury University, the No.2-seeded Sailfish struggled to put away the Eagles as they dropped the opening set before surviving the following three sets to win 3-1.
The victory for PBA gives the Sailfish their 30th win of the season against just three losses; their first 30-win season since 2004, which also happens to be the only other time in which the program has claimed a NCCAA National Championship.
Mariela Quesada continued her streak of double-digit kill efforts in the match but struggled out of the gate as she was forced into five errors in the opening set by the stingy Eagles (42-10) defense.
From that point however Quesada returned to her usual-dominant form by collecting a match-high 16 kills as PBA earned the match win by the scores of 26-28, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20.
Joining forces with Quesada on the front-line were the senior tandem of Lanae Robinson and Janeen McCormick who each aided the Sailfish attack with 11 kills each. Robinson narrowly outdid McCormick in hitting percentage as she tallied a .348 attacking mark and McCormick registered a .345 final tally.
Freshman Anna Hays who came through with a big performance in Thursday’s second match also added in eight kills as well.
Becca Acevedo and senior Jessica Way each contributed to leading the PBA offense as Acevedo dished out 35 assists while collecting nine digs while Way topped double-digits in assists as well with 12 assists.
Senior Allie Warren produced a tournament-high total of 25 digs to lead the defensive efforts for the Sailfish while Quesada made it three-for-three in double-doubles for the tournament as she registered 19 digs. Freshman Melissa McPeek continued her steady play as well with 14 digs.
Robinson and McCromick teamed with sophomore Christina Alessi to give the Fish a strong presence at the net on defense with the senior duo each collecting four block assists and Alessi leading the team with five block assists.
Asbury was led by Allison Rhner who managed 12 kills while libero Kelly Cole led all participants with 29 digs.
The Fish will take on No. 3-seed Trinity Christian College in their final match of pool play later on Friday with a 4 pm showdown.
