Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla.- A match filled with exciting moments and even more momentum swings, the Palm Beach Atlantic University and Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball teams may have only been giving the fans on Friday evening a teaser as to what a future potential matchup might be like on Saturday in the NCCAA Final Four. In the end the Wildcats would tally the 3-2 victory as they claimed the match with 25-12, 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, and 15-9 scores.
With the Sailfish (26-10) uncharacteristically having issues with their serve receive in the first set, the #1-seeded Indiana Wesleyan (31-11) team would easily claim the first set with a dominating .455 hitting percentage while limiting PBA to only a .038 total.
From there the Fish would rebound as they forced the Wildcats into nine errors in the second set after committing only one the first go around as PBA posted a more respectable .075 team hitting percentage.
Both teams would top the .200 mark in set three with PBA claiming another victory before a tight 25-23 matchup went the way of the Wesleyans in set four. Utilizing that momentum, the Wildcats would tally a more comfortable 15-9 win set five as they held PBA to a tournament-low -.23 hitting percentage.
Mariela Quesada posted her third consecutive double-digit kills performance with 17 kills but the sophomore transfer did also have 11 hitting errors. Senior Jennifer Eldridge and freshman Christina Alessi both came away with solid performances as well with eight and seven kills respectively.
Jessica Way finished with 43 assists in the tough five set loss while junior Allie Warren led five players in double-figures in digs with 22. Quesada posted a double-double with 11 digs to go with her 17 kills.
On the IWU side, a balanced attack was paced by freshman Rae Brandes and junior Peyton Thompson who each registered 11 kills while Rachel Quackenbush chipped in with 10 kills. Kelsey Masuda performed well from the libero position with 24 digs while Brandes tallied a double-double with 11 digs and 11 kills.
Setter Yui Iwase was solid for the match as well with 49 assists and six digs. Thompson proved dominating with her blocking efforts as she led all players with ten total blocks (eight assists, two solo).
With nothing but bragging rights and a potential higher seeding at stake with both teams already assured of a spot in the Final Four on Saturday because of their previous 3-0 records, the two teams will likely see each other again should they both win their first test of the Final Four.
PBA is likely to take on #3-seed and Pool B champion Campbellsville University in their first matchup on Saturday morning. Stay tuned to PBASailfish.com for updates regarding Saturday’s NCCAA schedule.
