Box Score DAVIE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team was unable to break their recent slide as they took on yet another tough opponent on Thursday evening in a road match versus Nova Southeastern University at the Don Taft University Center. The Sharks handled the Fish easily in the first two sets with 25-16 and 25-13 victories while holding off a valiant effort by PBA in set number three with a 33-31 win.
Having reached the NCAA Elite Eight last season with much of the same cast, the Sharks simply outhit the young Sailfish as they totaled 55 kills and just 11 hitting errors for an impressive .379 overall team hitting percentage in the three games. On the other side, the Fish were limited to an overall .117 team hitting percentage while producing 31 kills and 18 hitting errors.
PBA drops to 4-7 on the season having lost their last five matches while NSU improves to 10-6 on the year.
The Sailfish were led in large part by the play of senior Jennifer Eldridge and junior Liz Fugate as the tandem paced the Sailfish offensive attack with each registering eight kills. Eldridge did not register a hitting error on the night while leading the squad with a .348 hitting percentage while Fugate came away with a .244 hitting percentage.
Eldridge also paced the Sailfish defensive efforts with a season-high 23 digs while junior Kristin Carroll and freshman libero Heather Shulke both added in 16 digs. Jessica Way produced 29 assists in the losing cause.
The Sharks had an overall memorable night as senior setter Valia Petrova became the all-time career assists leader in Sharks NCAA history and finished with 41 total assists. Leading the offensive charge were a trio of NSU players that equaled double-digits in kills led by 12 kills from Molly Sigerich and followed by Lucia Cizmarova and Taylor Pohlman with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Senior Kathleen Yony finished with 22 digs for the Sharks including an impressive 11 digs in the first set.
PBA will look to break their recent losing streak on Saturday, September 26th at 1 p.m. when the Sailfish welcome in St. Thomas University for an afternoon volleyball match at the Rubin Arena.
