Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The heavy-hitting attack of the Barry University volleyball team proved too much for the young Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday afternoon as the Bucs posted an impressive hitting percentage on their way to a 3-1 victory over PBA at the Rubin Arena. The Buccaneers improved to 9-1 while PBA drops to 4-5.
The Bucs jumped out with an impressive showing in the first set as they totaled 16 kills and no hitting errors for a robust .444 overall team hitting percentage while PBA was limited to a .077 overall hitting percentage with 11 kills and seven hitting errors in a 25-19 victory for BU.
PBA wouldn’t quit however and stormed back to even up the match at one game apiece as they earned a 27-25 victory in game two as they produced a team-high .244 hitting percentage while the Bucs came back down to earth with a .118 overall percentage.
Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the momentum would die quickly as the Bucs jumped ahead 5-0 in the start of game three and never looked back as they limited PBA to a disappointing -.100 hitting percentage as a team in set number three as they prevailed 25-15. The Bucs closed the match out with a solid effort in game four as they return to Miami Shores with their ninth win in ten matches after a 25-17 game four win.
The Bucs rallied behind the big-hitting of junior Julia Teixiera who dominated with 16 kills (.280 hitting percentage) and produced just two hitting errors. Julia Ridley also provided a spark for the Black and Red with 13 kills and only two errors while leading all players with a .440 overall hitting percentage.
Spenser Rigg provided steady play all match long from the libero position for BU with game-high honors with 28 digs. Setter Libby Walter proved solid as well with 43 assists and nine digs. Milena Bukinac also played well in the back-row with 16 digs.
PBA was led once again by senior Jennifer Eldridge as the Palm Beach Gardens native produced 14 kills (.174 hitting percentage) while producing yet another double-double with 12 digs. Sophomore Jessica Way played well both as the setter with 33 assists but also came away with a team-high 18 digs.
Sophomore Maeghan Barber aided the PBA defense as well with 16 digs in three sets of action. Kristina Harter chipped in 13 digs.
PBA will be back in action against another Sunshine State Conference opponent on Tuesday, September 22nd when they travel to Lynn University with a 7 p.m. start time.Â
