Sailfish Come Out Swinging as PBA Slams Northwood

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- In the first of two meetings the next few weeks against West Palm Beach rival Northwood University, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team came out on Friday evening with a strong overall effort as the Fish earned a 3-0 victory over the visiting Seahawks. The victory pushes PBA back to .500 on the season with an 11-11 overall mark.

While no one Sailfish player put forth a dominating night from a statistical standpoint, the team did have a number of players demonstrate a strong showing before a nice sized crowd at the Rubin Arena. PBA started with back-to-back 25-17 wins followed by a 25-21 victory to close out the 3-0 sweep.

Sophomore Janeen McCormick tallied a solid outing with a team-high 12 kills giving her back-to-back matches with double-digits in kills after the team’s previous meeting with Barry University earlier this week. The Spanish River High School product also collected five block assists as she along with sophomore Lauren Villarreal teamed up several times on the night to stymie a Seahawks attack.

Senior Jennifer Eldridge and junior Kristin Carroll also put together solid performances with Eldridge delivering 10 kills (.259 attacking percentage) and nine digs while Carroll posted the opposite of nine kills (.241 attacking percentage) with 10 digs.

Lanae Robinson, a 5’11” sophomore from Cave Creek, Arizona, once again showed her potential with seven strong kills and just two hitting errors in 15 total attempts for a team-high .333 attacking percentage.

Defensively, the Fish received a nice showing from sophomore Allie Warren with 10 digs followed by eight digs from freshman Heather Shulke and seven digs by sophomore Maeghan Barber. Shulke played the first set as the libero followed by Barber in the white libero jersey for the final two sets.

Jessica Way once again did solid damage as the team’s setter with 36 assists.

The Seahawks were led by a strong defensive showing from libero Rachel Olds with 15 digs while Cody Kiraly and Kyle Jelke produced 10 and seven assists respectively. Melodee Pryce and Rebecka Ohman each had four kills to lead the way for the Hawks.

PBA will have the next week off from game action before taking on Eckerd College in their 2009 home final e on Friday, October 30th at 7 p.m. in the Rubin Arena.
