Box Score MIAMI LAKES, Fla.- In the middle of a rough stretch, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team came out on top on Wednesday evening as they hit the road for a midweek contest versus St. Thomas University. In the end, the Sailfish took the match by a final 3-2 tally and headed home with a much needed victory.
After jumping ahead with a solid 25-18 opening set win, the Sailfish allowed the Bobcats to creep back into the match and even take the lead as STU managed to win both the second and third sets by the scores of 25-19 and 25-22 respectively.
Needing to dig deep within themselves, the Fish fought back with a close 25-23 victory in game four after trailing for much of the set. That would bring things to the all-important fifth game which PBA nailed down with a fairly easy 15-8 advantage.
The win pushes PBA’s season record to 5-7 while STU dropped to 4-11 including an 0-3 mark against PBA this season.
“It was good to get a win today,” said first-year head coach Beth Avila.
“We needed this game and it showed in the girl’s performance down the stretch. The surroundings took some getting used to but the bottom line is that we fought for this win and pushed through,” continued Avila.
Senior middle-blocker Brittany Erickson paced the Sailfish attack with a season-high 14 kills while also adding in seven digs, and seven total blocks (three solo, four block assists).
Joining Erickson as a standout was fellow senior Emily Ryerson who continues to thrive in her role as possibly the team’s most valuable all-around player as she dished out 35 assists while adding in 17 digs, five kills, three service aces, and four total blocks. Senior Chrissy Gulden also put together a solid effort as she came away with 10 kills on the right side.
