Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team opened up their home season on Tuesday night before a solid Rubin Arena crowd that witnessed the Fish take down St. Thomas University for the second time in less than a week to keep their undefeated season in tact.
While not quite as dominant as their turn against the Bobcats in last weekend’s Saint Leo University Tournament which saw PBA take the match 3-0, tonight’s match did present its fair share of highlights as the Sailfish earned a 3-1 match victory.
After a dominating 25-13 opening game win, the Sailfish stumbled in game two with a 25-23 victory by STU. The Fish fought back soon after with a 25-13 win in game three and a 25-15 game four win.
With yet another chance to work in a high volume of players, PBA head coach Beth Avila appeared pleased with the result.
“We didn’t play our best and we have some things to work on, but at this point in the season I’m very proud of the effort our team is giving on each play,” said Avila.
Utilizing 11 different players on the roster, PBA was led by senior Brittany Erickson who totaled eight kills in the middle. A senior from La Mesa, California, Erickson also chipped in four service aces and six digs.
Fellow senior Emily Ryerson also tallied a solid performance as she enters a new role in 2008. Still the team’s top setter option, the addition of freshman standout Jessica Way has allowed the 5’9” Ryerson to also be an asset as a hitter as she collected six kills at a .357 hitting percentage while chipping 19 assists and four aces.
Freshman Allie Warren backed up her solid tournament over the weekend with another strong showing as she led the Sailfish with six service aces while also adding in five kills and ten digs. Sophomore Kristin Carroll once again proved her worth from a defensive standpoint as she led the squad with 12 digs.
Under new head coach Mauricio Diaz, the Bobcats were forced to use a smaller lineup and depth proved to be an even bigger issue with a few injuries along the way.
Adriana Montilla, a high-flying outside-hitter from Orlando, Florida, once again led the Bobcats attack with 10 kills but also totaled 11 hitting errors. Setter Fernanda Neves added in 25 assists while Julianna Rivera proved big on defense with 32 digs in the four games.
The Sailfish hit the road for their next contest as they travel over the weekend to Fort Lewis College for a series of tournament games.
