WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Taking advantage of a solid performance from some of their younger players as well as an exhausted Flagler College squad, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team came away with a much-needed 3-1 victory against the Saints on Saturday afternoon. The action capped a busy day of volleyball in the Rubin Arena as three matches were played in total.

A competitive match throughout, the two teams battled tough in all four sets as PBA jumped ahead 2-0 with 26-24 and 25-17 victories. Eleven kills and only one hitting error in game two highlighted a team performance that left head coach Beth Avila feeling proud of her team’s effort.

After a slip up in game three allowed the Saints to gain the momentum with a 25-23 victory, the Fish put things away for good with a 25-22 win behind a .297 attack percentage (14 kills, 3 errors).

Freshman Allie Warren and senior Brittany Erickson paced the Sailfish attack with 11 kills each while Warren tied for team-high honors with 16 digs along with junior Jennifer Eldridge.

A local product from Stuart, Florida, Warren also added in three aces while compiling one of her more impressive total performances of the season.

Other players putting together a solid outing were Kristin Carroll with nine kills and seven digs while sophomore Liz Fugate added in seven kills and four blocks (two solo, two block assists). Erickson led the Fish from a blocking standpoint with one solo and seven block assists.

It was Erickson and senior teammate Emily Ryerson who provided blocks on the final two plays that capped the match for PBA. Ryerson continued to do solid work from the setter position as she collected 36 assists, seven digs, and four service aces.

Flagler (15-13) was playing their third match of the afternoon and fifth of the weekend as they were visibly worn down as the match went on. The Saints however wouldn’t give up and produced a number of standout performances.

Justine Burkhardt led all players with 18 kills although she also added in nine errors. Meg Weathersby added in 15 kills and a team-high .371 hitting percentage with fifteen kills and two errors. Burkhardt also led the defensive effort for FC as she totaled 17 digs followed up by 16 digs from Katie Beale. Rebecca Royal led the setting efforts for PBA with 31 assists.

With the victory PBA splits over the weekend with a 2-2 record pushing their overall record to 10-14. The Fish will be back in action  next Friday as they will travel to Saint Leo University for a 7 pm match.
