Box Score West Palm Beach, Fla.- Welcoming in the Barry University Buccaneers on Friday evening, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team opened up play with a victory in game one before falling in the next three to lose the match by a final score of 1-3.
Having defeated Barry earlier in the season on the road, the Sailfish looked to be well on their way to another victory in game one after racking up a solid 30-25 victory over the Bucs. However, the tide would quickly shift to the red and blacks favor as they took down the Fish by the scores of 30-21, 30-25, and 30-26 to finish things out.
Now 12-14 on the season, the Blue and White have dropped three straight decisions while falling two games below .500 for the first time since their opening weekend of play. With the victory, Barry improves to 10-15 overall and some momentum to take home to Miami Shores.
The fish were led by four hitters who accumulated 11 kills each in their match against Barry at PBA’s Rubin Arena. Seniors Ali Mitchell (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm HS) and Bia Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) along with junior Brittany Erickson (La Mesa, Calif.) and freshman Kristin Carroll (Billings, Mont.) each tallied 11 kills apiece.
Junior Emily Ryerson set things up for the Fish heavy-hitters by totaling 42 assists from the PBA setter position. Mitchell led the defensive effort for PBA with 14 digs followed by sophomore Jennifer Eldridge (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer HS) with 13 digs and Santos with 10 digs.
On the Bucs side of the net it was obvious who the “go-to” player is for the Black and Red as junior Camilla Pagnan registered 70 total attacks in the three games on her way to a 26 kill performance in the win. Also collecting double-digit kills on the night were Caitlin Shawver with 19 kills and Stefanie Sveiven with 11 kills.
Defensively Lauren Evans notched an astonishing 29 digs from the back-row as she battled against the front-line players of PBA all night long. Setting up Pagnan and Shawver along with the rest of BU’s front-line attackers was setter Maria Romanowski who put together a night that included 63 set assists in the four games.
Now complete with their home season schedule, the Palm Beach Atlantic squad will attempt to get ready for postseason play as they hit the road to square off against Flagler College next Friday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m. They also have remaining road dates scheduled versus Rollins College (Oct. 27th) and St. Thomas University (30th) before heading to Chattanooga, Tennessee to participate in the NCCAA South Regional Tournament on November 2nd and 3rd.
