WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team pulled off a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Florida Tech in 10 innings on Wednesday at J.M. 'Jake' Rubin Park. The 'Fish clinched it with a decisive run in the bottom of the 10th. The visitors had leveled the game with two runs in the seventh, but PBA's pitching held strong in extra innings, allowing only five hits throughout the contest.
Santi Scheele kicked things off in the bottom of the second with a monster three-run home run over the left field fence.Â
Trey Miranda's single and stolen base in the fourth had set the stage for the Sailfish to widen their lead, though they couldn't capitalize in that inning.
The 'Fish pushed their lead to 4-0 in the third, with
Finley Holmes singling, advancing to third on
Ian Pennington's single, and scoring on
Patrick Rakes' sac fly. Florida Tech cut into the lead in the fourth with a run-scoring single by Marcello Cortale, making it 4-1.
Florida Tech kept chipping away, adding another run in the fifth with an RBI double by Anthony Fimiano. They tied it up in the seventh, scoring two runs aided by an error, making it 4-4.
The Sailfish answered in the tenth when a throwing error allowed
Finley Holmes to reach second. With
Patrick Rakes intentionally walked,
Kody Kelly stepped up, grounding into a play that resulted in another throwing error, sending Holmes home for the walk-off win.Â
Nolan Smoot was solid on the mound, pitching 3 innings, allowing just one hit, and keeping the opposition scoreless with no walks.
Lucas Chantres pitched 2 innings, striking out four but giving up one earned run on one hit and three walks.
Jack Mischke added 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout and a walk.
Jared Murray delivered 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out five and walking two, earning the win.
The Sailfish has this weekend off and return to the field next Tuesday evening when they host Nova Southeastern next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a midweek non-conference matchup.Â
