Men's Lacrosse Stumbles in Nail-Bitting Double Overtime Finish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team hosted the Rollins Tars in a Saturday midday matchup. PBA fell short after double overtime on its senior day, 11-10.

The Sailfish were trailing behind the Tars for most of the game but refused to give up on their senior day. With five seconds left of regular time, Bryce Downs netted the equalizer for PBA by picking up a rebound from Patrick Law's shot. With a score of 10-10 after regular time, the 'Fish hoped to get their first win in the conference this season. With two minutes left of the second overtime, the Tars scored the winning goal, and the Sailfish were defeated 11-10.

Caleb Southard opened the scoring for PBA on his senior day. A run behind the cage and a quick shot gave PBA the lead early in the game. Rollins responded with a successful shot from distance before Downs gave PBA the lead for the second time by shooting from outside the top of the crease. The Tars continued to make their attempts throughout the first quarter. The Sailfish were down 5-2 entering the second frame.

Goalie Brendan Pedisich made a pair of saves early in the second quarter before senior Curtis Goddard netted his first goal of the game. Keegan Southard assisted Goddard who tightened the score to 5-3. The 'Fish kept the Tars from scoring in the first eight minutes of the frame. Zion Lee attacked on top of the crease and netted a low shot to close the gap to 5-4. Rollins responded with a 3-0 run at the end of the quarter before K. Southard netted by taking advantage of a man-up situation. PBA entered the halftime break trailing 8-5.

K. Southard netted early in the third period from a spin move around his defender before shooting low into the net. The score stayed 8-6 for the first ten minutes of the quarter before Rollins extended its lead to 9-6. With less than a second left in the quarter, K. Southard assisted senior Tyler Hopkins who swung the ball into the net.

PBA entered the last frame being down 9-7. Led by Goalie Pedisich, the PBA defense kept the Tars from scoring. With nine minutes left, the Tars netted from a counterattack, extending their lead to 10-7. PBA started its comeback when K. Southard picked up the ball right at the top of the crease, netting his third goal of the game. With 2:19 left, Tucker Riggins ran across the field after winning the ball in defense. He swung the ball from a far distance into the net. PBA was trailing 10-9 with only seconds left of the game. Law's shot hit the crossbar before Downs picked up the rebound and tied the score, 10-10, with five seconds left.

Both teams had several opportunities to score in the first four minutes of overtime. K. Southard was close to giving PBA the win when he used a spin move around his defender behind the cage before shooting just outside the frame. PBA won the face-off in the second overtime, but Rollins's goalie saved the attempts. With 2:19 left, the Tars player ran past the PBA defense before shooting into the net. PBA fell short after double overtime, 11-10.

Goalie Pedisich saved 50 percent of the 22 shots against him in the game. The Sailfish had 49 shots, 21 of them being on goal. Both teams won 33 ground balls each, but the 'Fish won 13 face offs compared to the Tars 12.

The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team hits the road on Wednesday when they travel to face the University of Tampa. Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. (EST).
