WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team split its senior day doubleheader with the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The long ball was key in both games with the winning teams in each game hitting at least one multi-run homer. The doubleheader concludes PBA's home schedule. The Sailfish head to Nova Southeastern on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. for a midweek matchup with the Sharks.
GAME ONE
The Sailfish got off to a hot start in the first game of the doubleheader after senior day festivities concluded. The bats were ready to go as Matt Faranda hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Trey Miranda. Aaron Izquierdo and Trey Miranda kept the bats rolling with a couple of RBI singles in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third, Patrick Rakes scored on an error and then Aaron Izquierdo blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence for his first of the season. In the following inning, Chris Amparo added a solo shot, and the Sailfish started off the game with eight unanswered runs. The Eagles added the next three runs of the game but it was too little, too late and the Sailfish evened up the series.
Senior Derek Langfelder got the start for the Sailfish on the mound and got through six full innings of work while allowing nine hits but only two earned runs. Langfelder had four strikeouts and one walk on 81 pitches. Senior Daniel Foster came on in relief and put in three full innings of work to close out the game in a non-save situation. Foster gave up two hits and only one earned run. In 39 pitches, he had four strikeouts.
GAME TWO
With another quick start, The Sailfish found themselves up 2-0 after the very first inning. Patrick Rakes knocked in two runs on an single up the middle to give the 'Fish an early lead. Matthew Faranda added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth with a bases-loaded walk. Things changed in the top of the eighth when the Eagles hit a two-run double that was followed up by a three-run home run to take the lead. Embry-Riddle tacked two more runs in the top of the ninth with another double.
Nick Feretic got the start on the mound for the Sailfish. The graduate student got through 4.1 full innings while giving up four hits and no runs with six strikeouts on 89 pitches. Nolan Smoot came on in relief, only giving up one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Isaac Beebe threw 2.1 innings while giving up five hits and five earned runs. Liam Martin completed the partial inning from Beebe giving up no hits, two walks, and two earned runs in his 0.2 innings. Daniel Foster finished the game off with 0.1 innings in his second appearance of the day after throwing three innings in game one. He allowed one hit before getting the final out of the ninth inning.
