West Palm Beach, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team snapped an eight-game skid on Friday night by taking a 6-5 win in eleven innings in the series opener against Nova Southeastern.
Nolan Smoot got the start on the mound for the Sailfish in his usual Friday night slot. He went seven full innings and only allowed six hits and two walks on 97 pitches. Smoot, who also had 6 strikeouts, pitched one of his best games of the season and was unlucky to not receive the win.
After three scoreless innings, Matthew Faranda got things started for PBA with an RBI single that brought across Trey Miranda for the game's first run. The game remained a pitcher's duel for a while and the Sharks manufactured a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to tie the contest at one. With both teams tied after nine full innings, the game headed to extra innings.
Aidan Pierre started things off in the tenth with a double in the left center gap. Jake McNamara laid a bunt down and earned a hit after the bunt caused confusion between the pitcher, first baseman and catcher. As Giancarlo Chantres stepped into the box, a pickoff attempt on McNamara at first got past the first baseman and into right field. Pierre scored easily on the play and the Sailfish took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. However, the Sharks manufactured another run and sent the game to an eleventh inning.
Thanks to RBIs from Chris Amparo and Jake McNamara, as well as a wild pitch that scored Aaron Vetter, the Sailfish put up a four spot in the top of the eleventh to take a 6-2 lead. However, the Sharks just kept swimming. An RBI triple for Nova scored two runs and brought the Sharks back within two. After a wild pitch that scored the runner from third, the Sharks were one run away from sending the game to a twelfth inning.
After a hit by pitch, a single and an error, the Sharks had the tying run only 90 feet away and the winning run on first base. A.J. Prendergast came in relief of Isaac Beebe with two outs in the ninth after the aforementioned base hit. Prendergast produced a popout to second base and the Sailfish held on for the 6-5 win.
The Sailfish look to take the series win on Saturday afternoon doubleheader with the Sharks. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
