WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team concluded its weekend with a matchup against Bentley on Sunday afternoon.
The Sailfish (3-4) took a 6-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning. The Falcons (2-1) rallied with four hits and brought the go-ahead run to the plate with the bases loaded, but
Isaac Beebe got the strikeout with the high heater to earn his first save of the season and secure the 6-3 win for PBA.
Bentley started the game with a bang, with the second batter of the contest sending a high flyball over the left field fence for a solo home run. Starter
Derek Langfelder settled in after the face, punching out the next batter and tossing three scoreless innings following the homer.
PBA bounced back in the top of the second.
Chris Amparo walked and
Jake McNamara doubled to start the frame. A pair of sac flies from
Patrick Rakes and
Giancarlo Chantres put the Sailfish ahead in the game, 2-1. The 'Fish almost scored again in the third inning after a walk from
Ben Green followed by a single by
Matthew Faranda allowed Green to go first-to-third with one out, but a strikeout and a flyout got Bentley out of the jam.
Bentley tied the game in the fifth inning after three hits, including an RBI double down the left-field line. The Sailfish regained the lead thanks to a key Falcons miscue. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, a high flyball to right field was dropped, allowing Faranda to score to make it a 3-2 game.
A Falcons throwing error in the sixth started another Sailfish rally. After Rakes reached on a throwing error, back-to-back singles from
Trey Miranda and Green gave the Sailfish a 4-2 advantage. Free bases led to two runs for PBA in the seventh. Amparo was hit by a pitch and McNamara walked with one out to put a pair of runners on. Amparo scored on a single up the middle by Rakes. McNamara stole third base setting up an RBI groundout by Chantres to make it a 6-2 ballgame.
The Falcons made an interesting comeback attempt in the ninth with their hits, but PBA pitchers
Steve Trone and Beebe combined for three strikeouts to close out the 6-3 win.
Langfelder earned his first win of the season. He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Trone tossed 2.1 innings of relief, giving up one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Beebe was brought in for the final out of the game, giving up one hit before the strikeout.
