WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team overcame a two-run deficit with a four-run eighth inning to beat the Felician Golden Falcons in game one of the three-game series.
The Sailfish, who are now back to .500 (4-4) on the year after Thursday's victory, took the lead in the bottom of the third but gave it back in the top half of the following inning. The Golden Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth, but the Sailfish roared back in the bottom half with a massive, four-run rally. Isaac Beebe slammed the door shut in the ninth, recording his second save of the season.
Daniel Foster started off the game for the Sailfish. Foster, a senior out of Rockledge, Florida, made his first start of the season and pitched well. Foster got through five full innings, while only giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. He also recorded seven strikeouts on 73 pitches.
PBA kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a big hit from Patrick Rakes. After Matt Faranda made the second out at home on an attempted bunt squeeze play, Rakes stepped up with two outs and delivered a line shot to right field to score Chris Amparo from third.
Felician battled back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. A fielder's choice from the Golden Falcons with the bases loaded scratched across the tying run and then a couple of batters later the Falcons took the lead on a base hit. Later in the game, the Falcons added an insurance run on a fielder's choice RBI off of A.J. Prendergast which was unearned due to defensive mistakes earlier in the inning.
However, the Sailfish were not done yet.
Jake McNamara crushed a ball into left field that was misplayed by the left fielder and allowed McNamara to advance all the way to third base on the play. Patrick Rakes reached on another error from the outfield and pushed across the second run for the Sailfish. Giancarlo Chantres was the next beneficiary of a Falcon error and reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher.
At this point, the Falcons looked to their bullpen for relief, but the new pitcher walked Trey Miranda and loaded up the bases for Ben Green. Green singled on a hard-hit line drive and knocked in Aaron Vetter who pinch ran for the catcher, Chantres. Matt Faranda, the next batter, drew a walk and earned an RBI as Finley Holmes crossed the plate to give the 'Fish its first lead since the third inning. After Faranda was Chris Amparo, who lined out to center field but was deep enough to allow Trey Miranda to tag up and give the Sailfish a two-run cushion.
Isaac Beebe, making his second appearance of the season, got through his one inning of work with one hit, no runs, and two strikeouts. Throwing 18 strikes on 23 pitches, this is Beebe's second save in as many chances. A.J. Prendergast made his fourth appearance of the season and threw three complete innings. Prendergast got the win on one hit and one unearned run.
The Sailfish return to action on Friday night when they take on Felician in game two of the three game set at 6 p.m. at the J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park.
