WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team defeated the Felician Golden Falcons for the second night in a row to clinch the series. This time by a score of 3-1 while also throwing a combined one hitter. Nolan Smoot and Nick Feretic combined over the nine innings on the one-hitter.
Nolan Smoot got the start on the bump for the red-hot Sailfish, winners of four straight coming into the night. Smoot, came out red-hot himself. He didn't end up getting the decision but threw five full innings of no hit, no run baseball. Smoot had six strikeouts while allowing one walk on 62 pitches.
Nick Feretic followed Smoot in relief. Feretic, a graduate transfer from East Windsor, New Jersey, allowed one walk, one hit and one run in four innings of work. He also worked five strikeouts on 61 pitches.
The pitchers for both teams seemed to have the recipe for success as the game remained scoreless all the way until the bottom of the sixth. Ben Green stayed hot and led off the inning with a single. Next up, Matt Faranda launched a ball into the right-center field gap. With an aggressive base running decision assisted by third base coach Beau McMillan, the Felician shortstop threw the ball away and the ball ended up in their own dugout which allowed Faranda to safely cross home plate for the second run of the game. The triple with the throwing error made for an exciting "little-league homerun."
After Felician crawled back within one run in the seventh, the Sailfish were able to manufacture another run. Kody Kelly started off the inning with a leadoff single to left field. Aaron Vetter, a speedy freshman out of Boynton Beach, pinch ran for Kelly and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jake McNamara. Finley Holmes came through in the clutch to give the Sailfish a big insurance run with a big double to knock in Vetter.
Nick Feretic shut the door in the ninth, sitting down the Golden Falcons in order to earn his second win of the season and give the Sailfish their fifth win in a row.
The Sailfish return to the JM Jake Rubin Park on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they go for the sweep of the Golden Falcons and their sixth win in a row.
