WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team hosted the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Wednesday night.
The two teams entered the game sharing the fourth place in the Sunshine State Conference standings, but the game was never as tight as expected. The Sailfish set themselves up for a challenge early in the game after a 16-3 run by the Eagles. PBA could not bounce back and fell short, 82-50.
Jose Roberto Tanchyn was the only PBA player who broke double digits with his 11 points and four grabbed rebounds.
Joshua Ward scored eight points of his own.
Jamaal Walker finished the game with seven points.
Broderick Ellis and
Jakob Hester tied Tanchyn for the team-high with four rebounds each.
PBA kept up with Embry-Riddle in the first four minutes of the game. Ward started the scoring for PBA with two successful free throws, followed by
Alvin Tumblin Jr. and jump shots from Walker. The Eagles also found the basket early in the game and PBA was down 10-6 with 16 minutes left to play in the half.
The 16-3 run by the Eagles set the tone for the rest of the game. Embry-Riddle had a successful night from outside the arc, scoring 8-for-14 on 3-pointers in the first half. The Sailfish struggled to keep up with the Eagles scoring throughout the end of the half and were down 45-27 at the halftime break.
The Eagles did not back down in the second half and scored two early 3-pointers to stretch their lead to 63-32 after five minutes of the second frame. Tanchyn tightened the score for PBA to 66-40 with his eight consecutive points in the middle of the half. Burton Tyler followed up with a 3-pointer of his own, but the Eagles responded with a couple of successful free throws. Embry-Riddle's offense and shooting were too overpowering for PBA in the game.
PBA struggled to find its mark from outside the arc, making 31 percent of its 3-pointers. The Eagles scored 52 percent on 23 attempts, shooting a higher efficiency from three than from inside the arc. The Sailfish only shot 33 percent on 15 attempts from the charity stripe. PBA defeated Embry-Riddle in second-chance points, 8 to 2, but fell short in all other areas.
The Sailfish men's basketball team is back at Rubin Arena on Saturday afternoon to play the Tampa Spartans. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
