Men's Basketball Has Historic Offensive Output in Win Over Tarzans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team (4-0, 1-0 Sunshine State Conference) decisively defeated the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (0-2) 113-55 on Tuesday night at Rubin Arena. 

The Sailfish recorded 20 3-pointers and capitalized on 16 turnovers by UPRM, contributing to a commanding victory. This win marked the most points ever scored against a Division II opponent and the largest margin of victory against such an opponent. The 20 3-pointers are the most as a team in PBA's DII-era.

Preston Le Gassick led the team with a career-high 33 points, including eight 3-pointers, and added four steals. His total ties for the fourth most points scored in PBA's DII-era. Christian Kirkland contributed significantly on the boards and in playmaking, recording 10 rebounds and seven assists. Graham Worland made an impact from beyond the arc, scoring a career-high 17 points with five 3-pointers and adding three steals. Clay Payne was strong defensively, posting two blocks while scoring 11 points.

The 'Fish started the game by establishing an early lead, fueled by Le Gassick's hot shooting, including multiple three-pointers. The team capitalized on turnovers and maintained a strong presence in transition, scoring 13 fast break points. Le Gassick finished the half with 27 points, shooting 9-for-13 from the field. By the end of the first half, the 'Fish led 53-22, setting a confident tone for the remainder of the game.

The 'Fish surged in the second half, capitalizing on turnovers to initiate a commanding run. Worland played a pivotal role with multiple 3-pointers, while Kirkland provided key assists. The home team forced turnovers and crashed the boards hard leading to fast breaks and second-chance points, extending their lead significantly. The 'Fish concluded the half with a dominant 60-33 advantage, resulting in a decisive 113-55 victory.

PBA shot 53 percent from the field, including 51 percent from 3-point range on 39 attempts. The 'Fish converted on 15-of-19 at the free throw line. The Sailfish dominated the boards 47-26, including 16 offensive rebounds leading to 23 second-chance points. PBA forced 16 turnovers, leading to 30 points off turnovers. 

The Sailfish host the PBA Thanksgiving Classic this weekend. The 'Fish take on Emmanuel University on Friday at 4 p.m.
