Sailfish Take Third Place at Rain-Shortened DII National Preview

9/24/2024 2:49:00 PM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's golf team finished play in its second tournament of the season at PGA National today. A rained-out second day off competition cut the tournament down to the 36 holes played yesterday and saw the Sailfish take third place.

The 'Fish faced one of the toughest fields of the season this week at the DII National Preview. The event featured six of the top 10 teams in the country which PBA bested four of as they captured third place. Raines Holmes led the Sailfish as he shot rounds of 65, six under, followed by an even par round to sit in solo second. Holmes was making birdies in bunches as he had seven quickly in round one followed by five in round two. Jordan Verge matched Holmes in the first round as PBA was leading the tournament as a team after 18 holes, but he came back to earth with a second-round 75 to finish tied for seventh.

Justus Verge and Cole Gillis each finished the event tied for 31st. Justus shot rounds of 71-76 while Gillis went 73-74 as they both settled at the five-over-par mark. Niko Karoutsos finished tied for 61st in the 75-man field with rounds of 76 and 78.

The strong finish for the Sailfish should see them jump in next week's national rankings after cracking the top 25 for the first time in program history last week. PBA returns to play on Oct. 6 as they head down to play in the NSU Shark Invitational.
