HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's golf team teed it up for the first time this season at the Saint Leo Griffin Invite. The Sailfish closed with the best team round of the tournament today in round three to capture a four-shot victory.
The Sailfish sat in fourth place after the opening day of play, 36 holes, led by
Raines Holmes who opened with rounds of two-over 73 and even par 71 and sat in 10th overall. In his collegiate tournament,
Cole Gillis sat in the top 15 with rounds of 72 and 73. He was tied with teammate
Jordan Verge who sat one stroke better than his brother Justus after the opening 36 holes.
Niko Karoutsos finished the day at six-over par and sat in 30th place while
Caleb Lynady competed as an individual shooting 79-75.
With 18 holes to play to close out the tournament, the Sailfish got stellar performances from Holmes and
Justus Verge. Justus fired a bogey-free three-under while Holmes made five birdies while shooting a one-under 70 to propel the 'Fish up the leaderboard. The two teammates finished in a six-way tie for third, nine shots behind the individual winner.
Jordan Verge was steady with a one over 72 while Gillis earned a top-20 finish with a closing 75. Karoutsos matched the final round number from Gillis to get inside the top-30 while Lynady finished with a final round 82.
The victory marks the second straight season the Sailfish have captured an early season fall tournament win. PBA takes down a field that had a handful of NCAA region tournament teams last season. The Sailfish will look to carry their strong play into their tournament next week when they play at PGA National at the DII National Preview on Sep. 23-24.
