BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team fell to Lynn University by a score of 12-4 on Tuesday. This was the fourth matchup of the season between the two teams, and the Sailfish (11-21) took the last three games in a series back in late March.
Nolan Smoot was the starting pitcher for the game, and in the first inning, the 'Fish started with no runs and gave up four to the Knights early. This led Coach Bottenfield to make his first pitching change of the evening, going with David Chenoweth to take over for Smoot. Smoot allowed four hits and four runs and had four errors in his short time at the mound. The second inning was scoreless for both teams, but terror struck for PBA in the bottom of the third.
After four walks and another run for the Knights, Bottenfield made another pitching change, replacing Chenoweth with Jake McNamara. Chenoweth only gave up one hit but did have four walks that led to the five scores later in the inning. Lynn managed to score another run with McNamara at the mound, giving it a 10-0 lead at the end of the inning.Â
The 'Fish did finally manage to get a run on the board in the top of the fourth after a Nate Housen single, followed by stealing second, which allowed Sean Williams to send him home to get the RBI. McNamara only pitched 0.2 of an inning before being replaced by Andrew Sieczkowski in the bottom of the fourth, which was his first appearance for the Sailfish this season. McNamara allowed two hits and a run in seven bats faced.
The Knights put up their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth, which gave them a 12-1 game-high lead. Another pitching change was made for the 'Fish, replacing Sieczkowski with Eli Scadina. Sieczkowski only pitched an inning and faced three batters, but he didn't allow any hits or runs in his time at the mound. Scadinas' time didn't last long, as he was replaced by Jimmie Buhl after pitching one inning. Scadina gave up one hit, two runs, and two walks as a pitcher. In the bottom of the sixth, Stanton Leuthner singled, then stole second and third, which led to Housen grounding out to second base but got him the RBI after Leuthner got to home plate, making it 12-2 in favor of Lynn.
Buhl was replaced in the bottom of the seventh by Zachary Orloff, and though Buhl had a wild pitch and a walk in his time, he did have two strikeouts. Orloff pitched for only an inning as well and didn't allow any hits in the four bats he faced. Richard Daronco was the eighth pitcher of the night for PBA and also had a short time at the mound. Daronco had two strikeouts in his six bats faced.
The Sailfish managed to score two runs in the ninth, after both Patrick Rakes and Raymond Hawkins got walked to get on base, followed by a grounded out by Gracin Cambas and a Kody Kelly single that led to the two scores. The 'Fish ultimately could not pull off the comeback and fell by a score of 12-4 to the Knights.
Kelly, Housen, Williams, and Cambas had an RBI apiece, and Smoot was credited with the loss, making him 1-1 on the season. The Sailfish will travel to Barry University on Friday, April 12, to face off against the Buccaneers for the third time this season. PBA looks to even the score as they have lost both the games they already faced against Barry this season.
