Sailfish Victorious In Third Matchup With Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team was victorious in their first game of the series with Barry University on Friday night. The Sailfish (12-22) dominated the entire game and beat Barry for the first time this season after losing the first two meetings.

PBA got rolling early after a single by Trey Miranda, who advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, which led to a Ben Green RBI after a groundout to second that sent Miranda home. Barry evened the score in the bottom of the first, but in the second inning, the 'Fish pushed to a 4-1 lead. That was after Sean Williams and Jake McNamara hit two singles to get on first and second, followed by a Miranda double through the left side to get two RBIs.

Williams opened up the top of the third with a homer, which was his first of the season. It was 5-1 going into the bottom of the third, then the Buccaneers caught fire, scoring four straight runs. This caused Coach Bottenfield to make his first pitching change of the evening, replacing the starter, Ryan Webster, with Justin Lovell. Webster had one strikeout but gave up three hits and four earned runs in his 2.1 innings on the mound. Another homer happened in the top of the fourth, thanks to Nate Housen, which made for his fifth home run of the season. The three-run shot from Housen drove in  Green and Matthew Faranda.

In the top of the fifth, Williams singled through the left side, and McNamara followed that with a single that led to a throwing error by the Buccaneers outfield and sent Green home, making the score 9-5. Neither team scored in the sixth, and in the seventh, Barry had an opportunity to score. With three men on base and only one out on the board, the Buccaneers batter hit a grounder, which led to a clutch 543 double play by the Sailfish. A.J. Prendergast was the pitcher after he replaced Lovell at the beginning of the inning. Lovell had an impressive line with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. The 'Fish closed out the inning with the score remaining 9-5 in their favor.

In the ninth, the 'Fish had an opportunity with Brice Mortillaro and Matty Warren on first and second, but the Buccaneers kept them scoreless and had one more opportunity to either win it or go to extra innings. After Prendergast walked two Bucs batters to open up the final inning, he was replaced by Isaac Beebe. Prendergast pitched only two innings, notching three strikeouts and giving up one hit. Beebe proved once again he has ice in his veins after forcing three quick outs, two of them being strikeouts. The 'Fish walked away with their first victory against Barry this season, with the final score being 9-5.

Housen led the team in RBIs, and Williams also had a notable performance with an RBI himself, along with a team-high four hits and three runs. Lovell was given the victory as pitcher, and Beebe was credited with the save.

PBA will play Barry again tomorrow in a double-header that will be played at 1:00 and 4:30 p.m.
