Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team split in their double header with Barry University on Saturday. The Sailfish (13-23) did not score in the first game of the day, but caught a rhythm in the second.

GAME ONE: PBA: 0 | BU: 15

Daniel Foster was the starting pitcher for the Sailfish, but Barry was locked in early to try and avenge the loss from Friday night. The Buccaneers got up 5-0 before Coach Bottenfield had to make a pitching change, replacing Foster with Gavin Ingram. Foster did have four strikeouts in his five innings pitched, but he allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned). Ingram's time as a pitcher was not very long, giving up two quick runs, and he didn't get to finish the inning before being replaced by Jarred Murray. Ingram gave up two runs and hits in 0.2 innings.

Murray pitched the entire bottom of the seventh, but seven runs were scored in the inning alone, pushing the lead to 14-0 in favor of Barry. Jack Mischke then replaced Murray in the bottom of the eighth. Murray allowed five hits and had seven runs. He did manage to get one strikeout in 1.1 innings. The Buccaneers scored once again to make it a 15-0 lead over the Sailfish. PBA did not score the rest of the game, making it their largest loss of the season.

GAME TWO: PBA: 5 | BU:2

In game two, the 'Fish looked a lot more locked in. Neither team scored for the first two innings, but PBA was the first on the board in the top of the third. Giancarlo Chantres started the play with an early single to left field, followed by a sacrifice bunt, setting up a single by Matthew Faranda to send Chantres home. Barry had a strong fourth inning, scoring two runs on two hits, two walks and an error to put themselves up 2-1 going into the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, the Sailfish scored again. That was after Nate Housen got walked then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, followed by a Raymond Hawkins single up the middle to tie the game at 2 apiece. Nolan Smoot replaced the starter, Derek Langfelder, in the bottom of the sixth. Langfelder pitched five innings, gave up three hits, two runs, while having one strikeout.

PBA started rolling in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs in the inning. Pedro Figueroa got the first RBI, after sending Jake McNamara home on a single to left center. Housen followed with a single himself, and Sal Grinstead did the same thing to send Figueroa home and get the RBI. In the eighth inning, PBA pushed its lead to 5-2. Faranda started the play with a single, followed by a single down the right field line by McNamara. An error on the play allowed Faranda to score and make it a 5-2 game.

The 'Fish didn't score in the top of the ninth and Smoot was replaced with the closer, Isaac Beebe. Smoot did have an impressive line, with only one hit allowed, and three strikeouts in three innings. Beebe did Beebe things in the final inning, allowing no hits or runs so the Sailfish could escape with a 5-2 victory, winning the series two games to one. Beebe earned his fifth save of the season.

PBA is on the road again against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University next week in a series that will start on Friday, Apr. 19 at 3 p.m. It will be their first meeting of the season.
