DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team bounced back with two victories in a Saturday double-header with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The Sailfish (15-24) have eight games remaining in the season.
GAME ONE: PBA: 7 | ERAU: 4
In the bottom of the first, both teams showed no scores, even though the Eagles did get two hits in the inning. But, in the top of the second, the 'Fish got hot. Nate Housen got it started with a single and advanced to second, while Stanton Leuthner followed with a single, and then Patrick Rakes got walked. Shortly after, Matty Warren got the RBI after a single that sent Housen home to give the 'Fish the first lead of the game at 1-0. The Sailfish were just getting started, as they scored three runs after Faranda got walked and Ben Green singled to send Leuthner, Warren, and Rakes to home plate, which made it a 4-0 lead in the PBA's favor. The starting pitcher, Ryan Webster, put on a stellar performance on the mound to close out the second with no Embry-Riddle runs scored.
In the third inning, the Eagles returned the favor after they held the 'Fish to no runs as well, and this time, they scored one of their own on their try. PBA still led by three runs but gave up two more in the bottom of the fourth, which made it a 4-3 Sailfish lead. Nolan Smoot replaced Webster in the inning after Coach Bottenfiled decided to make his first pitching change. Webster did give up six hits and three runs in his time, but he did have two strikeouts in 17 batters faced, along with no walks.Â
The 'Fish got rolling once again to open up the fifth inning after they scored three runs on four hits. Sal Grinstead and Housen started the run by getting on base quickly, then on the following plays, Jake McNamara, Leuthner, and Rakes all hit singles that gave them an RBI each, and the Sailfish regained their four-point lead. PBA then kept the Eagles scoreless on their try and in the sixth inning as well.
PBA didn't score any more runs through the rest of the game, but all they had to do was keep the Eagles scoreless through it too. Bottenfield went with Isaac Beebe at the mound after Embry-Riddle scored a quick run to cut the game to 7-4. Smoot only allowed one run as a pitcher but did give up four hits. Beebe did Beebe things and was credited with the save after closing out another game for PBA, making it his sixth save of the year. The Sailfish escaped with the victory at 7-4.Â
Green led the team in RBIs with two, along with two hits on five at bat. Housen, Leuthner, and Rakes all had two hits as well, and neither of them was struck out. Smoot was credited with the win, making him 3-1 on the season. Beebe allowed no hits or runs in his short time at the mound as well.Â

GAME TWO: PBA: 8 | ERAU: 4
In game two, the Eagles came out very strong, getting a quick 4-0 lead with Derek Langfelder at the mound to start the game. The 'Fish did not get a score until the top of the fourth, where they put up two runs in the inning to make it 4-2. That was thanks to an RBI from Leuthner off a single to right field that sent Housen and Grinstead home after they got on base on the previous plays.Â
PBA scored two runs to tie up the ball game in the top of the sixth, thanks to Matty Warren and Giancarlo Chantres, who had the RBIs, after they sent Leuthner and Rakes home to make it 4-4. This forced the Eagles to make a quick pitching change, which unfortunately worked in their favor after they got two quick outs on the Sailfish to send it to the bottom of the sixth. Langfelder did a great job at the mound, though, after allowing no hits and a strikeout, which led to three quick outs for the Eagles.
In the seventh and eighth inning, neither team scored, and Langfelder was replaced with Justin Lovell as pitcher. Langfelder allowed six hits and four runs in his time on the mound, but did have two strikeouts. The score remained tied at four until the ninth inning, where the 'Fish got hot.
Matthew Faranda opened the inning with a double, but shortly after, the Eagles forced two quick outs. But, after Nate Housen intentionally walked to move Faranda to third, Jake McNamara followed with a single through the right side to put them up 5-4. A balk then allowed McNamara and Housen to move up a base to make another opportunity for a PBA run, and Stanton Leuthner singled to send Housen home and give them a two-run lead. The Eagles coach made a quick pitching change after the Sailfish scored, but Patrick Rakes hit a double on the first play out of the break. That gave PBA a game-high lead at 8-4, and Embry-Riddle did not score in their final try, which gave the Sailfish the double-header sweep and a victory for the series at 2-1.
Langfelder was credited with the win, making him 3-2 on the season. Lovell had a great showing on the mound, as he only allowed one hit in his seven bats faced and had two strikeouts. Leuthner had himself a game as well, with four RBIs, three hits, and two runs. He did that all in five at bats as well.
The 'Fish will play their eighth straight away game on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 6 p.m., where they will take on the Saints from Flagler College.
