ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team fell to Flagler College by a score of 4-1 on Tuesday night. The two teams faced off back in late February, and the Sailfish (15-25) were victorious by a score of 5-4 on their home turf.
The Saints got up 2-0 through the first three innings of play, and though David Chenoweth was the starting pitcher, he was replaced by A.J. Prendergast in the bottom of the third. In Chenoweth's short time on the mound, he allowed three hits and a run on his nine bats. Chenoweth did have two strikeouts and no walks in 2.0 innings pitched.Â
Patrick Rakes opened up the fourth inning with a single to Flagler's shortstop, then advanced to second on an error shortly after. A few plays later, Gracin Cambas singled to right field and got himself an RBI after Rakes stormed into home plate for the PBA's first run of the game. The score was 2-1 in the Saints favor going into the fifth inning, and Coach Bottenfield made his second pitching change of the evening, replacing Prendergast with Jared Murray. Prendergast gave up two hits in eight bats faced and allowed one run in his time as a pitcher. He did manage to get one strikeout and a groundout, though. The Saints scored their third run in the inning, making it 3-1 over the PBA.
Neither team scored in the sixth, but another pitching change was made before Flagler was up to bat. Jimmie Buhl clocked in for Murray on the mound after Murray only pitched for one inning with only five bats faced. Buhl only pitched for an inning as well, after being replaced by Matthew Faranda in the bottom of the seventh. Buhl did not allow any hits or runs in his short time and did manage to get a strikeout on 14 pitches. Unfortunately, Flagler pushed their lead to 4-1, which would remain the score throughout the rest of the game.
Faranda was not the final pitcher of the game, as Bottenfield made another change in the eighth, going with Isaac Beebe to finish the game. Though Faranda had a strikeout, he gave up a hit, a run, and two walks in one inning pitched. Beebe had a strikeout as well in the eighth inning and also added two grounded outs to his line. Kody Kelly and Rakes were the leaders in hits with two and Rakes also had an RBI to add to his stat sheet.Â
The Sailfish are back at home Friday, Apr. 26 at 6 p.m. after the last eight games were on the road. They will face off in a series with Rollins College that will be played through the weekend.
