Sailfish Earn Midweek Victory Over Vulcans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team returned home tonight to host California Pa. in a nonconference matchup. After a series at No. 1 Tampa over the weekend, the Sailfish bounced back behind strong pitching and timely hitting to come away with the 6-1 victory. PBA's record moves to 5-12 with the win and they remain at 1-5 in Sunshine State Conference play on the season.

The Sailfish gave the ball to Matthew Faranda who started on the hill for the first time this season. The Vulcans jumped on top in the first inning after a one-out walk was brought home later in the inning on a sacrifice fly. From that point on, Faranda settled in and looked in control. PBA got on the board in the bottom of the third when they were able to plate five runs. The 'Fish took advantage of two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the innings with no outs. Trey Miranda got a timely double down the third base line which scored two runs. A Faranda RBI groundout, a Nate Housen flyout to right field which was dropped, and Stanton Leuthner's sacrifice fly wrapped up the five-run inning.

The visitors threatened in the following inning when two one-out singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and was the end of the line for Faranda. He ended after going 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, one run, and striking out two. He was replaced by Ryan Webster who was the first man out of the bullpen. A strikeout and a groundout left the bases loaded as Webster was impressive throughout the night. He went 3.1 innings in relief, scattering three hits, and striking out four batters as he picked up his first win of the season.

PBA added on one run of support in the seventh as a Patrick Rakes leadoff double was plated on a Leuthner two-out single. Jimmie Buhl was the third pitcher into the game for the Sailfish and he recorded two outs before Gavin Ingram came in to close out the night. The freshman looked impressive on the hill in his 1.2 innings as he didn't allow any baserunners and struck out four batters.

PBA was outhit 9-6 on the night but the Vulcans committed two errors and issued six free passes. The middle of the order did the majority of the damage for the Sailfish as Miranda, Faranda, Housen, and Leuthner all had hits and RBIs on the night.

The two sides will see each other again in two days as they will face off on Wednesday at J.M Jake Rubin Park.
