Sailfish Fall In Back to Back Games on Wednesday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team fell in two games on Wednesday against Post University and Felician University. The Sailfish (5-14) played the Eagles (7-11) for the second time this season and the Falcons (9-11) for the first time since 2018.

GAME ONE: PBA - 6, Post - 8

Today was the second time the 'Fish have faced off against the Eagles this season. In its first matchup, Post University took a 5-1 victory back in early February. David Chenoweth started on the mound for the 'Fish, but Post got going early after two runs in the first to give them the early lead. Nate Housen responded with his first home run of the season in the bottom of the second to give PBA its first score of the game.

Post struck back in the top of the fourth, getting its third run of the game to go up 3-1. When the 'Fish were up to bat, Matthew Faranda singled up the middle, and Housen hit his second home run of the game to tie it up 3-3. In the top of the fifth, Nolan Smoot replaced Chenoweth as pitcher. Chenoweth allowed seven hits but only one walk in his time on the mound.

The 'Fish got their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. After Matty Warren got walked, he then stole second, and shortly after, Faranda singled to right field to get the RBI. After taking the lead, Coach Bottenfield made another pitching change, going with Jimmie Buhl to take over for Smoot in the top of the sixth. Terror would then strike for the 'Fish, as the Eagles got four runs on three hits to give them a 7-4 lead.

Both teams played even until the final inning. Post managed to get one more run in the top of the ninth to take its largest lead of the game at 8-4. The 'Fish only had one more opportunity to send it to extra innings or walk away with a comeback victory going into the bottom of the ninth. Warren and Ben Green managed to get on base, and Housen got an RBI after grounding out to third to send Warren home. Stanton Leuthner also got an RBI after sending Green home on a single to right field. Unfortunately, the Sailfish could not even the score and would fall 6–8.

Buhl was credited with the loss after three runs were scored in his time as pitcher. He also had three errors and four walks. Housen was the best performer for the 'Fish, after having two runs, two hits, and four RBIs in the game. Warren also had a notable performance, with two runs and a hit, along with Leuthner and Faranda who had an RBI each.

GAME TWO: PBA: 7, FU: 9

The second game of the day was played against Felician University. The last time these two teams faced off was in March of 2018. Gavin Ingram started on the mound for the 'Fish, but the Falcons came ready to play as they got up 6-0 in the first inning due to some errors, a wild pitch by Ingram, and a couple walks. Ingram was replaced as pitcher by Zachary Orloff in the top of the second. Ingram only allowed one hit in his time on the mound, but unfortunately gave up six runs on four walks and a hit batter.

In the bottom of the second, the 'Fish got their first run on the board. Stanton Leuthner doubled to right field, and following shortly after, Gracin Cambas would get the RBI after a single that sent Luethner home. The Falcons extended their lead to 9-1 in the third inning and the 'Fish were scoreless through the third and fourth. Coach Bottenfield made another pitching change going with the freshman, Jared Murray. Orloff gave up three hits, runs, and errors while also allowing two walks in his time as pitcher.

The 'Fish made a run in the bottom of the fifth after a Jake McNamara single, a Warren walk, a single by Ben Green loaded the bases, Matthew Faranda gained two RBIs after a single that drove McNamara and Warren home. Following shortly after, Leuthner also got himself two RBIs after he singled to right field allowing Faranda and Green to give the 'Fish two more runs. The score was 5-9 going into the top of the sixth.

The two teams played even until the Sailfish got another run on the board to cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the seventh. Leuthner, Patrick Rakes, and Sean Williams got the bases loaded for the 'Fish, followed by a Cambas walk to give him the RBI. The score was 6-9 still in Felician's favor going into the final two innings.

In the top of the eighth, Derek Langfelder replaced Murray as pitcher. Murray pitched four solid innings, allowing no runs and only one hit for the Falcons with two strikeouts. Felician did not score in the eighth, allowing the 'Fish another chance to cut the lead down, and that they did after Warren hit a clutch triple to get him in scoring position. The next play, Green earned an RBI after grounding out to second, allowing Warren to score and make the score 7-9 in favor of the Falcons.

After keeping the Falcons scorelss in the ninth, PBA had a chance to make a comeback. Leuthner ledoff the inning with a single, but was left stranded. PBA didn't allow a single run for six innings and closed the game with eight unanwered runs, but couldn't finish the job. Langfelder only allowed one hit, had two strikeouts, and a walk in two innings pitched.

Leuthner had four hits, two RBIs, and two runs for the game, making him the top performer. Faranda also had a notable performance with two RBIs, two hits, and a run. Ingram was credited with the loss which now makes him 1-1 on the season as pitcher.
