Sailfish Pitching Blanks Lynn For Home Victory

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team returned to action tonight as they welcomed Lynn University for the first game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference set. The Sailfish pitching shut down the Fighting Knights throughout the night on their way to a 1-0 victory. PBA's record moves to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in conference play as they have now won four games in a row.

The only run of the night came in the opening inning for the Sailfish. Matthew Faranda reached on a leadoff error and was later brought home on an RBI single from Sal Grinstead. From that point on, neither team was able to hit situationally as they combined to go 2-for-28 with runners on and 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

Daniel Foster got the ball for his third straight start and he delivered with his best performance of the season. He went seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and striking out eight. Lynn had runners on the bases throughout the night, but time and time again, Foster was able to get out of jams. Behind Foster, Lynn stranded nine runners on the night.

Offensively, the Sailfish were able to muster six hits, as Ben Green led the way with two hits. Faranda, Grinstead, Stanton Leuthner, and Pedro Figueroa all collected hits as well for the 'Fish.

Foster's work was done after seven innings and PBA turned to Nolan Smoot out of the bullpen to close out the game. Making his fourth appearance of the season, Smoot retired all six batters he faced while striking out two batters on his way to a two-inning save. Foster takes his record to 3-3 on the season with the win while Smoot earns his first save as a Sailfish.

The two sides are back in action tomorrow for games two and three of the series. The Sailfish will look to build on their current four-game winning streak and earn their second-straight SSC series win.
