Sailfish Continue Win Streak After Series Sweep Against Lynn

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team defeated Lynn University in both games of a double header matchup on Friday. The Sailfish (11-18) have now won their last six games making it their largest winning streak of the season and take their Sunshine State Conference record to 7-8 on the year.

GAME ONE: PBA: 7 | LU: 3

After two scoreless innings, the Sailfish were the first to strike in the bottom of the third. That was after Ben Green hit a single up the middle, followed by an advance to second on an error by the Knights. With no outs on the board, Matthew Faranda got the RBI off a single to right field that sent Green home, giving PBA the 1-0 lead. A couple of plays later, Faranda scored a run after a double by Nate Housen to go up 2-0. The Knights responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to just one in favor of the 'Fish.

Another two scoreless innings went by, and in the top of the sixth, Lynn tied the game up at 2 apiece. The Sailfish were still asserting dominance, as they took the lead again after some big plays in the bottom of the sixth. Stanton Leuthner got things started with a single, and he reached second due to an error by the Knights first baseman after a Housen hit. Shortly after, the two advanced after a Sal Grinstead sacrifice bunt, putting them on second and third. The bases were loaded after Pedro Figueroa got walked, which allowed Matty Warren to hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to send Leuthner home and give the 'Fish the lead back at 3-2. The next play, Figueroa and Housen both stole a base to get PBA back in the same position with a man on second and third again. Then, Sean Williams then got himself two RBIs after a double that sent Figueroa and Housen home and extended the Sailfish lead to 5-2.

The Knights scored their third run in the top of the seventh off a homer, which led Coach Bottenfield to make his first pitching change of the evening, replacing starter Ryan Webster with Isaac Beebe. Webster pitched 6.2 innings and allowed nine hits on 30 bats faced, but he did have three strikeouts and no walks in his time at the mound.

In the bottom of the seventh, the 'Fish got back up three. Trey Miranda created the run after a single and an advance to second on a wild pitch, then reached third after Faranda grounded out to the pitcher. The RBI came from Leuthner on a sacrifice fly that gave Miranda a run and put PBA back up three. In the bottom of the eighth, Figueroa hit a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then Williams followed that with a sacrifice fly to send him home and get the RBI, which gave the 'Fish their largest lead of the game at 7-3.

All the 'Fish had to do in the final inning was force three outs to walk away with the win, and that they did. After a fly out to center field, Beebe struck out the next two batters for the Knights to seal game one for the Sailfish. Beebe pitched 2.1 innings and only allowed one hit, with zero runs scored. He also only faced eight at-bats and had three strikeouts, two of them being the game-winning plays.

GAME TWO: PBA: 1 | LU: 0

Derek Langfelder started game two for the Sailfish as a pitcher, and this game showed a lot less action than game one, with no runs being scored until the bottom of the ninth. Langfelder had himself a game at the mound through the first seven innings, only allowing two hits on 27 bats faced. Langfelder also tallied five strikeouts to his line but was replaced by Faranda in the top of the eighth.

Faranda didn't even pitch an inning as he was moved to designated hitter in the top of the ninth. Gavin Ingram was the one called to finish the game at the mound, and he delivered, allowing no hits and having a clutch strikeout to close the inning and give the 'Fish one more chance to walk away with a victory.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Green hit a single and stole second with no outs on the board, giving the Sailfish an opportunity to get a run on the board. Trey Miranda then got walked, and Faranda made a huge play with a single to right center to get the first and only RBI of the game for either team, sealing the victory for the PBA making the series a clean sweep for the 'Fish. Ingram was credited with the win after his only strikeout being one of the most important plays of the game, making him now 2-1 on the season at the mound.

The Sailfish will take a week off and then will host Florida Southern College at home for a series that will start on Friday, April 6, with one game and two games on Saturday, April 7.
