TAMPA, FLA.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team fell in both games of its doubleheader against No.1-ranked Tampa on Saturday. The Sailfish (4-12) are now 1-5 in SSC play.
GAME ONE- PBA: 4, UT: 13
The 'Fish were coming off a 15-3 loss to the Spartans on Friday night, but started better on Saturday, taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Trey Miranda got things going for PBA after a single to left field. Matty Warren drew a walk the next play to move Miranda to second. Ben Green turned a bunt into a single, which laoded the bases for the Sailfish. Matthew Faranda reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Miranda to put them up 1-0. After the Faranda RBI, Pedro Figueroa earmed himself an RBI after grounding out to second, which gave Warren the opportunity to score. The starting pitcher for PBA, Justin Lovell, allowed no hits in the bottom of the third to keep the Sailfish lead going into the fourth.
Unfortunately, in the fourth, Tampa hit a two-run homer to tie the game at two. That would lead Coach Bottenfiield to make a pitching change, going with junior Daniel Foster in the bottom of the fourth to limit the damage to two runs. Tampa took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning after taking advanatge of a Sailfish throwing error.
The Spartans scored three more runs through the next two innings to push their lead to four. In the bottom of the seventh, Jared Murray replaced Ryan Webster on the mound. The freshman came it and pitched a scoreless seventh inning, including his third punchout of the weekend. PBA scored its third run of the game in the eighth inning. Green earned a walk, stole second, then advanced to third after a single from Nate Housen. Green scored after a fielder's choice from Jake McNamara. That would be the final run for the Sailfish, falling to Tampa by a score of 13-4.
GAME TWO- PBA: 3, UT: 13
In game two, the 'Fish found themselves down 9-0 through the first six innings of play. In the top of the seventh, Housen got on base after an error by Tampa's right fielder and then stole second right. Housen advanced to third on a passed ball. Then, Stanton Leuthner reached first on a fielder's choice, which led to a throwing error by the Spartans, which sent Housen home for PBA's first run of the evening. The Sailfish scored their second run just a few plays later, after Brice Mortillaro doubled down the right field line, which sent Kody Kelly and Leuthner home. The 'Fish still trailed 13-3 going into the last two innings, activating the SSC's run rule.
