WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team won their second straight game after defeating Flagler College by a score of 5-4. The Sailfish (4-9) came back after clutch plays at bat and in the outfield to walk away with a victory.
The starting pitcher, Justin Lovell, got to work early, grounding out the first at bat for the Saints, and followed that play with a strikeout. Unfortunately, the Sailfish found themselves down 3-0 going into the bottom of the third after Coach Bottenfield replaced Lovell with the sophomore, AJ Prendergast, to pitch in the beginning of the inning. After Trey Miranda got hit by a pitch to get him on base, Ben Green grounded out to the second baseman, which allowed Miranda to advance to second. Matthew Faranda would then get the RBI after an error by the Saints second baseman, which allowed Miranda to get to home plate, giving the 'Fish their first run of the evening, making the score 3-1 going into the top of the fourth.
Prendergast held his own but only pitched the third and fourth inning until Bottenfield made his second pitching change of the evening, going with Ryan Webster to begin the fifth. Webster would only allow two hits and no scores for the Saints through the next two innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Nate Housen would steal second after being walked to get himself in scoring position. The redshirt senior, Stanton Leuthner, would then hit a double to left center to send Housen home and get his sixth RBI of the season. The score would remain 3-2 in Flagler's favor through the seventh inning.
Midway through the top of the eighth, Gavin Ingram would replace Webster at the pitcher's mound. A grounder to the first baseman that was thrown to the pitcher to get the out got the Sailfish in position to hold the Saints scoreless for another inning, and that they did because shortly after, Leuthner made an incredible dive to give the Saints their third out. In the bottom of the eighth, Faranda and Green would score a run each to put the 'Fish up 4-3 after Housen was up to bat and reached first on an error by Flagler. Following the next play, Giancarlo Chantres would get himself the RBI after a single to center field, which gave Housen the unearned run and PBA a 5-3 lead heading into the ninth.
After the Saints were able to cut the deficit to one, Jimmie Buhl came in for Webster as a substitute to finish out the game. The Saints were able to get bases loaded, but a clutch performance at the mound by Buhl that gave him the save allowed the 'Fish to escape with a victory, with the final score being 5-4.
Housen was the leader in runs and RBIs for PBA and Ingram was credited with his first win of the season as pitcher. The Sailfish baseball team will play again on Friday Mar. 1st, where they will host the Buccaneers from the University of Tampa. They will also face them in a double header the following Saturday.Â
