WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team split with Saint Leo University in a double header matchup on Saturday. The Sailfish (3-9) lost the first game of the day to the Lions (9-2) but came back later in the day to get their first Sunshine State Conference win of the year.
GAME ONE- PBA: O, SLU: 5
The Lions came in confident after their victory against the 'Fish on Friday night and did not allow a single run the entire game. Saint Leo scored five runs within six innings, and though they did not score any more runs after that, they still managed to do outstanding work at the pitcher's mound and in the outfield.
Isaac Beebe was the starting pitcher for the Sailfish and was handed his second loss of the season.Â
GAME TWO- PBA: 6, SLU: 3
The second game of the day was an opportunity for the Sailfish to turn things around and finish the weekend on a high note after taking back-to-back losses to the Lions. Head Coach
Kent Bottenfield made a pitching change for the game, going with
Derek Langfelder at the mound. Langfelder started hot after striking out the Lions batter in the first at bat and picking up a ground ball that came right to him and tossing it to first to shut out Saint Leo to open up the game.
Matthew Faranda would be the one to get the 'Fish going on the offensive end. After hitting a single to left field, Faranda ran home after a double to right field by
Nate Housen, which gave Housen the RBI. Following the next play,
Pedro Figueroa got himself an RBI as well after hitting a single to center field to give Housen the run and the Sailfish a 2-0 lead.
The Sailfish would not score again until the bottom of the third, when Housen hit a home run to give himself the RBI and put the 'Fish up 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth, a double to right field by
Matty Warren, followed by a single by
Ben Green, allowed Warren to give PBA their fourth run of the game and Green the RBI.Â
Daniel Foster would replace Langfelder in the fifth inning, and the Lions would eventually score their first run in the top of the seventh. But the Sailfish responded with their fifth run of the game after a single to right field by
Trey Miranda to send
Giancarlo Chantres to second and Figueroa into home. In the top of the eighth, Faranda would replace Foster as the pitcher, and Saint Leo scored their second and third runs to cut the lead to 5-3. But, after Housen doubled to left field, followed by an advance to third on a passed ball, Figueroa would then get the RBI after a single to left field that sent Housen home, putting the 'Fish up 6-3.
PBA did an outstanding job in the outfield, and Faranda was credited with the save after only allowing two hits and no scores for Saint Leo in the top of the ninth. Green and Figueroa both led the way in RBIs for the 'Fish, with only five at bats each. Figueroa was also able to get four hits in his five tries and also get himself a run. Foster got his second win of the season as pitcher, making his record for the year 2-1.
The Sailfish baseball team will play again on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at the J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park to continue their beginning of the season home stretch. They will face off against the Saints from Flagler University.
