Sailfish Earn Walkoff Win Over Bobcats

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team faced St. Thomas in a Thursday night matchup at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park.

An RBI single by Trey Miranda tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, forcing extra innings. The 'Fish completed the comeback in the bottom of the 11th. Sean Williams led off the frame with a double down the leftfield line. Ben Green squared to bunt to move him over to third, but Green's well-placed bunt and speed forced an errant throw by the Bobcats, allowing Williams to score and win the game 6-5.

Williams led the Sailfish with three hits and two RBIs at the plate. Miranda and Matthew Faranda tallied two hits each. The 'Fish totaled nine hits with five walks in the game. Daniel Foster earned the win on the mound. He came through for the Sailfish, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

The Sailfish jumped out to an early 4-0 run in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run single from Williams. The PBA pitching staff held the Bobcats hitless through the first five innings. The offenses for each team were silenced throughout the middle innings.

STU broke through in the top of the seventh. A two-out rally consisting of a walk and three hits scored three runs, making it a 4-3 ballgame. PBA tried to answer in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases, but a double play ended the inning. The Bobcats took the lead in the top of the eighth with another two-out rally. A single and a double set up and a two-run single for the Bobcats, allowing the visitors to take the lead, 5-4.

Heading to the bottom of the ninth, the Sailfish were down to their last chance. It was their turn to come up in the clutch, and Matty Warren and Miranda delivered. Warren singled through the middle and showed off his speed, stealing second base to put a runner in scoring position. The steal set up the RBI single from Miranda that tied the game and forced extras.

After each team went down in order in the 10th, the 11th inning had plenty of drama. Two singles to start the top of the frame put Foster in hot water. The lefty got a strikeout for the first out of the inning. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Foster got out of the inning by forcing a pair of popouts to keep the game tied. The Sailfish only needed two batters to take care of business in the bottom of the 11th. Williams' double was the only extra-base hit in the game for PBA, but it was the only one it needed as the 'Fish walked it off, 6-5.

Jimmie Buhl started the game for the 'Fish, tossing two innings before A.J. Prendergast entered in relief. He threw 4.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Isaac Beebe surrendered two runs on three hits with a strikeout in one inning of work. Derek Langfelder entered the game in the eighth inning, inheriting Beebe's runners. He gave up a two-RBI, go-ahead single that allowed STU to take the lead. He stopped the bleeding before being relieved by Foster in the ninth.

The Sailfish play a midweek game on Tuesday against Barry. The game at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park is set for 6 p.m.
