Sailfish Fall to the Buccaneers

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team fell to Barry University by a score of 15-10 Tuesday night. The Sailfish (2-7) and the Buccaneers (6-5) competed in a non-conference matchup before PBA starts conference play later in the week.

The 'Fish got up to an early lead in the first two innings of play. In the first, a walk by Ben Green and Nate Housen along with a single to right field by Matthew Faranda set Pedro Figueroa up for a sacrifice fly to send Green in to home for the first run of the game. The starting pitcher, Aj Prendergast, got it going early, forcing three quick outs in the bottom of the first. The second inning was much the same as the first, as Gracin Cambas got himself to third base after a few errors by Barry, and a Trey Miranda hit a single to right down the middle to center field to allow Cambas to get the unearned run and the Sailfish to go up 2-0.

In the top of the third, the Buccaneers started firing on all cylinders as they scored nine runs in the inning. The Sailfish did not get a run on the board until the bottom of the fifth inning, where they scored twice after Cambas grounded out to third base, which allowed Figueroa to get to home plate, giving Cambas the RBI. Following the next play, Brice Mortillaro hit a homer to cut the score to 14-4. The Sailfish would then go almost two innings without scoring and find themselves down 15-4 heading into the eighth.

Gavin Ingram did a good job to start the eighth inning, setting Barry down in order. The 'Fish went out fighting and scored six runs total in the bottom of inning, which cut the lead to 15-10. Miranda, Warren, and Green all got walked to get the bases loaded, and Kody Kelly got hit by a pitch and then advanced to second due to a wild pitch that gave PBA two quick runs. Stanton Leuthner got himself two RBIs following a single that brought Kelly and Green to home plate. The Sailfish scored two more runs after another single, this time by Miranda, who gave himself two RBIs.

Unfortunately, the 'Fish did not score any more runs after the scored their 10th of the evening. The Sailfish open up conference play starting this Friday against the Lions from Saint Leo University. They will play just one game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a double header on Saturday at 12 and 3 p.m.
