Sailfish Split In Their Double Header on Saturday

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team went 1-1 in their doubleheader on Saturday. The Sailfish (1-6) played against the Bentley University Falcons (1-1) earlier in the day, and later they played the University of Mount Olive Trojans (2-1).

The Sailfish would start the day facing off against the Falcons, who they haven't played against since their 5-2 win back in February of 2019. The second game was held at 4 p.m. where PBA would face off against the Trojans for the first time in their DII history.

GAME ONE- PBA: 4, BU: 3

The baseball team was looking to get their first win of the season against Bentley, and they did. In the bottom of the second inning, the 'Fish would score their first run of the game. Thanks to Michael Schettino's single to right field, followed by a big double to left center by the junior Sal Grinstead, PBA took an early lead.  Derek Langfelder was strong for the Sailfish in his second appearance of the season as he went six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out four batters.

The bottom of the seventh inning is where the 'Fish really started to click as a unit. They scored three big runs to put them up 4-0. A Trey Miranda single allowed pinch runner Sean Williams to score and a Matty Warren double, plated Miranda. After a walk by Ben Green and a stolen base by Warren, the Florida native, Matthew Faranda hit a sacrifice fly to put the 'Fish up 4-0 heading into the final two innings.

The Sailfish were able to get through the eighth inning, holding the Flacons scoreless but tensions would soon rise in the final inning. Faranda struggled early in the ninth inning after he got the last out in the eighth. The bases were quickly loaded before AJ Pendergrast entered to close out the game for PBA. He allowed a single and a sacrifice fly but got out of the jam for the Sailfish and earned his first save of the season as PBA held on for a one-run win.

GAME TWO- PBA: 11, UMO: 18

The Sailfish were looking for a two-game sweep coming into their second game of the day. In the first inning, the 'Fish jumped ahead as they managed to hold down the Trojans and  put up a quick five-run inning of their own. The rally was in thanks to six hits in the frame including by Matty Warren and Ben Green to get them on base and allowed for Pedro Figueroa and Gracin Cambas to send them home with back-to-back singles. Those two then scored runs after two more singles to center field by Michael Schettino and Sal Grinstead.

The Trojans cut the score to 5-2 by the bottom of the fifth. But, Sean Williams singled over to left field which allowed Patrick Rakes to advance to second and Matthew Faranda to get the RBI. Grinstead followed shortly after with another big single to right field which plated Williams and Rakes to finish out the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Green hit a triple to get himself in scoring position. Faranda followed with an RBI double scoring Green. Cambas got in on some more action with a single to right field which then took Faranda home to give the 'Fish a 10-2.

It seemed like the 'Fish had the win in the bag, but through the next three innings, the Sailfish would use five pitchers who struggled to close out the game for PBA. The Sailfish gave up 16 unanswered runs giving the Trojans the 18-10 lead. The Sailfish did put one more score on the board after a Grinstead double followed by a single by Trey Miranda. It was not enough for the Sailfish to mount a comeback and the Trojans ended up stealing a win that was sure to be PBA's after the first six innings of play.

PBA is slated to return to play on Feb. 15 when they play host to St. Thomas. The Bobcats are 7-4 so far this season.
