WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team competed on Saturday against Rollins in a Sunshine State Conference matchup.
The Sailfish went the distance with the Tars, as the match needed every bit of five sets to decide a winner. The 'Fish faced a 10-7 deficit in the final set but kills from
Harper Stokes and
Sydney Corbett kept the Sailfish alive. A pair of attack errors allowed PBA to complete its comeback and win the set 15-13 to earn the 3-2 win over the Tars.
Stokes led the Sailfish with 13 kills, hitting a team-high .379 with seven blocks. Corbett added 11 kills, hitting an efficient .321 from the outside with 10 digs.
Savanna Rogers notched a double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs.
Kelsey Rogers recorded 10 kills with five blocks.
Kaileigh Ammons tallied seven kills with three blocks.
Gabi Ashcraft led PBA with 40 assists with 17 digs and three blocks.
Abbie Zylstra led the squad with 21 kills as libero.
"I am super impressed with our team grit on the road in the fifth set on senior night," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "Our whole season, we continue prioritizing progress and growth, and we got to see that today. Sydney had a breakout match for her own leadership and carried good momentum from the match yesterday as a communicator and organizer."
The Sailfish started slowly, with Rollins taking the first set 25-13. PBA bounced back in the second set. With the frame tied at 11 apiece, the Sailfish went on a 6-1 run featuring a balanced attack. Stokes carried the bulk of the offense, helping PBA take the set 25-17. The Sailfish hit a match-best .452 in the set.
"Kelsey and Harper continue to be incredibly active and reliable middles in our league, carrying a huge number of attempts and blocking very well," Huebner said. "Gabi did a really good job of creating good offense and staying on top of the adjustments. She was consistent as a blocker and defender as well, leading to one of her best matches of the season."
PBA kept its momentum going, building an early lead in the third set, including three aces by Ashcraft. Kills from K. Rogers and S. Rogers put the 'Fish ahead 11-5 early. The PBA front line of Ammons, Stokes, and Corbett notched back-to-back blocks later in the set, followed by two kills from Ammons to give PBA a 21-12 lead. Rollins made a small run late, but a kill from K. Rogers put the exclamation point on a 25-20 set win to give PBA a 2-1 lead.
"Savanna and Gail were stellar defensively," Huebner said. "They have developed a really good report in the last few matches, and their interchangeability allows us to match up in different situations while remaining comfortable in receive."
The fourth set was tightly contested for the entirety of the set. The 'Fish had a chance to put the match away in four. Kills from Stokes and S. Rogers helped give PBA a 23-21 lead in the fourth. Rollins stayed alive with a 4-0 run, including three kills and an attack error to win the set 25-23. The fourth set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes.
The Tars took a 9-5 lead early in the fifth set after three unforced errors from PBA. The Sailfish stormed back with a kill by S. Rogers, Stokes, and Corbett, along with a block from Ashcraft and K. Rogers to take an 11-10 lead. A block and kill from the Tars made it 12-11 RC. The teams traded service errors to tie the set at 13. Two errors from the hosts secured the 15-13 win for the Sailfish, clinching the match.
PBA outhit the Tars .234-.225. Rollins totaled 13 service errors in the match. PBA recorded 12 total blocks compared to six for RC.
"We are looking forward to a big week of matches as we travel to Barry and celebrate our seniors in Rubin over the weekend," Huebner said.
PBA travels to face Barry on Tuesday. The match in Miami Gardens, Fla. takes place at 7 p.m.
