Volleyball Drops Match to No. 19 Barry

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball hit the road for its final away match of the 2024 season, taking on No. 19-ranked Barry.

The Sailfish looked to build off Saturday's thrilling five-set win over Rollins. PBA had the chance to keep the momentum going against a ranked Bucs team. The 'Fish had an opportunity to get revenge against Barry after it swept PBA at home earlier this season. The Bucs gifted the Sailfish seven service errors in the match, but the hosts held on to win the match, 3-0.

Savanna Rogers led PBA with seven kills, three digs, and one block. Kelsey Rogers hit a team-best .357 with six kills and three blocks. Sydney Corbett finished with five kills and three digs. Harper Stokes tallied four kills and two blocks. Gabi Ashcraft notched a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs, leading the team in both categories.

"Kelsey played a really solid match today at Barry," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "Her decision-making and blocking effort was consistent and exactly what the game plan called for. She has grown so much this year and has established herself as one of the best freshmen in the league. Sydney and Sav did a good job managing out of system for us, and serve receive was excellent throughout."

PBA's serve receive struggled to open the match, as Barry recorded three aces to start the first set. The Sailfish fought back from Barry's early 7-2 lead to cut the deficit down to two in the middle of the set, but the Bucs answered with a 4-1 run to regain a five-point lead. Barry held on to win the first set, 25-19.

The Sailfish were forced to play from behind again in the second set. An 8-1 run from the Bucs built a 10-5 lead for the hosts. PBA responded with a 3-0 run, including a kill by Stokes. Another 3-0 run from PBA later in the set cut Barry's lead to two. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, they failed to string enough points together to complete their comeback. Barry won the set, 25-21.

An 8-1 run early in the third set resulted in a 12-4 advantage for the hosts. The Sailfish tried to chip away at the lead, but the Bucs won the set 25-18 to secure the 3-0 win.

"The match came down to 1 serving run each set for Barry that we took too long to get out of," Huebner said. "We cannot wait to get back to Rubin and celebrate our seniors who have given so much to our program. See everyone this weekend!"

PBA returns home for its final two matches of the year. The Sailfish host Eckerd on Friday at 7 p.m. before playing Saint Leo for senior day on Saturday at 4 p.m.
