Volleyball Suffers Defeat at No. 24 NSU

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team returned to action on Friday night at Nova Southeastern.

The Sailfish (6-7, 0-3 Sunshine State Conference) had its third consecutive match against a ranking opponent, taking on the No. 24-ranked Sharks (12-2, 3-1 SSC). The 'Fish recorded eight blocks in the match, but the NSU attack still operated efficiently, hitting .310 for the match. The Sharks overpowered the Sailfish, 3-0.

Savanna Rogers led PBA's offense with eight kills, hitting .133 with five digs. Kaileigh Ammons and Harper Stokes tallied four kills each. Ammons hit a team-best .375 with three blocks. Stokes led PBA's front row with four blocks. Gabi Ashcraft recorded a team-high 22 assists with six digs and two blocks. Jayna Bredenberg totaled 12 digs as libero.

"Gabi Ashcraft did a good job in her first match setting a 5-1 today," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "I thought she made good choices with the ball and created opportunities for her hitters. Jayna continues to play clean in receive and as a defender, and I am proud of her growth."

The Sailfish played from behind early in the first set. The Sharks started the match on a 9-1 run due to three unforced errors from the Sailfish. Ammons was the sole point scorer through the middle of the set as the senior tried to get PBA back into the set. PBA reduced the deficit to six but ultimately dropped the opening set, 25-13.

Rogers got going for the Sailfish in the second set. She recorded five kills with two aces in the frame as the 'Fish tried to get back into the match. The Sailfish held NSU its lowest hitting percentage of the match but came up short, 25-17.

PBA turned in its highest hitting percentage of the match in the third set, but an early run allowed the Sharks to build an insurmountable advantage. Stokes recorded three of her four kills in the set, but NSU clinched the match after winning the third, 25-19.

"Savanna was a reliable point scorer in the left for us today and did a good job executing her role for our team," Huebner said. "Looking forward to our match tomorrow with Florida Tech."

PBA looks to bounce back on Saturday at Florida Tech. The match in Melbourne, Fla. is set for 4 p.m.
