Volleyball Drops Match Against FSC

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team faced Florida Southern in a rare Monday Sunshine State Conference matchup in Rubin Arena.

Monday's game was a makeup against the Mocs with the original game having been postponed due to Hurricane Milton's arrival. The Sailfish came out strong in the match, winning the first set, but FSC recovered to win the match, 3-1.

Savana Rogers was a bright spot for the Sailfish offense. She led the team with 17 kills and six digs, hitting .209 from the outside. After a good start, Kaileigh Ammons finished with seven kills, hitting .200. Abbie Zylstra recorded six kills with two blocks and three digs. Harper Stocks totaled five kills and a team-high three blocks. Gabi Ashcraft tallied a team-best 31 assists with eight digs. Jayna Bredenberg totaled 10 digs as libero with five assists.

"I liked how we came out tonight, decision-making and aggression from our hitters was at a high level from the first point," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "Sav continues to be excellent for us on the pin as an attacker, passer, and leader. I think Abbie has put together a good string of matches for us in many different roles, playing each of them with confidence."

Ammons and S. Rogers were firing on all cylinders for the Sailfish offense in the first set. The pair combined for 11 kills in the opening set, helping PBA hit a match-best .351. A 9-1 run midway through the frame, allowed PBA to build a four-point lead. FSC cut the Sailfish lead to one point but kills from S. Rogers, Kelsey Rogers, and Ammons closed out the set for the 'Fish, 25-23.

The Sailfish benefitted from several unforced errors by the FSC offense in the second set. PBA received 10 free points, but the 'Fish offense was frustrated by the Mocs' front row. FSC tallied five blocks in the set as the Sailfish offense couldn't find its rhythm. Two different 4-0 runs by the visitors allowed FSC to win 25-18.

PBA's offense improved in the third set, hitting .250 as a team. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the Mocs hit .375 in the set, cleaning up some of the unforced errors from the previous set. FSC took a large lead early in the set and PBA couldn't recover, dropping the set, 25-18.

The 'Fish tried to bounce back in the fourth, taking an early 10-5 lead in the set. PBA failed to hold the lead, dropping the set 25-14 to secure the match for FSC.

"As a team, we're looking to control first contact better and continue to improve every day in league play," Huebner said.

The Sailfish have a big test on Tuesday, taking on No. 19-ranked Lynn. The match in Rubin Arena is set for 7 p.m.
