WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team hosted Palm Beach County and Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn at home on Tuesday night.
The Sailfish were playing their fourth match in five days, facing a Fighting Knights team that entered the match ranked No. 19 in the AVCA top 25. PBA tried to get revenge against Lynn after losing in five against the Fighting Knights in Boca Raton earlier in the season. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, the Fighting Knights' attack was too much to overcome as Lynn won the match, 3-0.
Savanna Rogers,
Kelsey Rogers, and
Sydney Corbett tied for the team lead with eight kills each. K. Rogers posted a season-best .583 hitting percentage with three blocks and four digs.
Kaileigh Ammons finished with five kills, hitting an efficient .308 with six digs and three blocks.
Gabi Ashcraft tallied a team-high 22 assists and 10 digs.
Jayna Bredenberg recorded eight digs and seven assists as the libero.
"We played a pretty scrappy match tonight against Lynn and saw some of the best play of the season from
Kelsey Rogers and
Kaileigh Ammons," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "Both did a good job connecting with Gabi in and out of system."
K. Rogers was on fire to start the match. The sophomore recorded five of her eight kills in the opening frame. Lynn gifted the Sailfish five service errors, but The Fighting Knights still held a commanding lead in the first set. Lynn won the first set, 25-19.
S. Rogers and
Harper Stokes helped the Sailfish build an early lead in the second set. The visitors answered with a 10-3 run to retake the lead, 14-13. A kill from S. Rogers and an ace by
Mary Jones put the Sailfish back in front 17-14. Tough serves from Lynn led to back-to-back aces for the Fighting Knights, kickstarting a 9-3 run to close out the set. Lynn took the second set, 25-21.
The Sailfish did not go down easily, hanging with the Fighting Knights for most of the third set. PBA was tied with the Fighting Knights 14-14 and continued to trade points with Lynn before an 8-1 run put the match away. Lynn won the set 25-17 to secure the 3-0 win.
"Throughout this week's matches we learned a lot about the different ways we can add depth and consistency into our program moving forward," Huebner said.
The Sailfish hit the road this Friday to play Saint Leo. The match on the road takes place at 7 p.m.
