WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team concluded its weekend with a matchup against Embry-Riddle on Saturday in Rubin Arena.
The Sailfish honored several PBA indoor and beach volleyball alumni before and during the match. The 'Fish hoped to treat the home crowd to a win, but they ran into a pesky Eagles team looking to bounce back after a loss at Lynn on Friday night. The Sailfish struggled in serve receive surrendering 12 aces as ERAU won the match 3-1.
Sydney Corbett led PBA with 13 kills with digs.
Savanna Rogers tallied 12 kills, hitting .200 with nine digs and two blocks.
Harper Stokes recorded seven kills, hitting a team-best .417 with five blocks.
Gabi Ashcraft notched a team-high 28 assists and five digs.
Jayna Bredenberg tallied 17 digs as libero.
"We loved having all the alumni in the Rubin for today's match," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "We continue to make progress as a team, and I liked the way we competed in the first 3 sets. Harper did a good job being a terminal attacker today while Jayna anchored the defense. We got a lot of good live leadership from Abbie [Zylstra] today who contributed in various ways."
The Sailfish front row tried to set the tone early, picking up several blocks against the Eagles early in the first set. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, their serve receive surrendered three aces as a part of a 9-1 run that allowed the visitors to take control of the first set. The Eagles took the opening frame, 25-20.
ERAU kept up the tough serving which not only led to aces but also made it harder for the Sailfish to run their offense. PBA hung with the Eagles for most of the set, but a 4-1 run late in the set gave the Eagles a 22-19 lead. An ace by the Eagles and a service error by the Sailfish allowed ERAU to take the second set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
PBA got its offense to click better in the third set. The Sailfish hit a team-best .242 in the set and held ERAU to a match-worst .146 hitting percentage. The visitors held a 24-23 lead, but an error by ERAU, a block from Stokes and Ashcraft, and a kill from Rogers clinched the set for PBA 26-24.
Unfortunately for PBA, the Sailfish comeback was short-lived. The 'Fish couldn't put the ball away offensively, posting its lowest hitting percentage in the match. ERAU won the final set, 25-12 to secure the match.
"Hosting Florida Southern on Monday means we have another opportunity to make progress and compete in the best conference in D2," Huebner said.
PBA's match against FSC takes place at 5 p.m. at home in Rubin Arena.
