WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks on Friday, facing off against the Rollins College Tars in Rubin Arena.
The Sailfish showcased efficiency on the offensive end, recording a season-best hitting percentage in the match. Despite outhitting the Tars, .290-.257, PBA struggled serving the ball, recording 16 service errors in the four sets. Rollins took advantage of the free points, winning the match 3-1.
Savanna Rogers led PBA with 17 kills, hitting an efficient .341 and tying for a team-leading 16 digs.
Sydney Corbett tallied 12 kills with seven digs.
Kaileigh Ammons notched 10 kills, hitting .368.
Harper Stokes recorded eight kills, hitting a scoring .615 with five blocks.
Kelsey Rogers showcased her presence at the net with six blocks to go with seven kills, hitting .267.
Gabi Ashcraft led the squad with 46 assists.
Jayna Bredenberg totaled 16 digs as libero.
"This was our best offensive match of the year," PBA head coach Jeff Huebner said. "Sav played a complete match, offensively, defensively, and as a leader on the court for us. Kaileigh, Kelsey, and Harper continue to lead on the court in efficiency and blocking. Unfortunately, we couldn't solve the service line today, and capitalize on a terrific match from our attackers and setter."
PBA's woes at the service line started early in the match. The Sailfish totaled five service errors in the first set. PBA outhit the Tars offensively .368 - .243, but the unforced errors stunted the hosts' ability to string together points. Rollins stole the first set, 25-23.
Despite a match-high six service errors in the second set, PBA made up for it by hitting a match-best .371 and holding the Tars to a match-worst .167 hitting percentage. Corbett, S. Rogers, and Stokes provided the offense with K. Rogers and Stokes swatting balls at the net to lead PBA to a 25-20 win.
Rollins led most of the second set, but the Sailfish remained within striking distance. With PBA trailing 21-17, A service error from the visitors, an ace from
Mary Jones, and kills from
Anna Beth Stokes and Corbett tied the third set at 21. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, RC answered with three consecutive kills to retake the lead 24-21. The Tars held on to win, 25-22. PBA only recorded one service error in the set but hit a match-worst .139 offensively.
The struggles at the service line returned in the fourth set, giving Rollins a crucial four points. The frame was still tightly contested, but three attack errors from the Sailfish made it 22-18 RC. A 4-1 run from the Sailfish made it 23-22, but an error from the Sailfish and a kill from the Tars secured the win for the visitors. Rollins clinched the match 3-1
"We are so excited to host Alumni Day tomorrow and welcome home some of our favorite All-Time Sailfish," Huebner said. "Looking forward to seeing everyone in Rubin at 4!"
