WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's golf team left the state to compete in the Doc Spragg Invitational hosted by Findlay in Ohio. The Sailfish finished tied for fifth in the field of 19 teams.
The 'Fish were led by
Jordan Verge who was consistent throughout the two-day, 54-hole event. He fired rounds of even par 72 and 71 to sit in 14th after the opening day of play.
Cole Gillis started the tournament strong with a 73, 72 while
Niko Karoutsos played his best golf of the season as he opened with a 74, followed by a round of 73 to sit in 37th place.
Justus Verge shot a 76 in his opening 18 holes and improved in the second round of the day with a 74.
Raines Holmes, who has been the best player for PBA throughout the early season, didn't have his A-game during the first day as he sat in 71st after rounds of 75 and 78.
The Sailfish sat in 6th place as a team as they returned to Findlay CC for the third and final round of play for the tournament.
Jordan Verge shot a 73 which moved him up the leaderboard three positions to 11th as he finished even par for the event. Karoutsos shot his best round of the season by four strokes with a two-under 70 to jump to 16th place. Gillis fell down the board with a 77 as his score wasn't used by the team. Holmes bounced back with a 73 while
Justus Verge shot a 76 as they each finished in 59th place in a field of 100 players.
Grand Valley State ran away with the team victory at -24 while PBA shot scores of six over, two over, and four over as a team to finish 12 over and in fifth place.
PBA earned their third top-five finish in the four events they have played so far this season. The 'Fish return to play on Oct. 28 when they head to Orlando to play in the Citrus Intercollegiate hosted by Rollins.
