WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team hosted Nova Southeastern in a Sunshine State Conference matchup on Tuesday night.
The Sailfish attack was firing on all cylinders as PBA (5-5, 1-2 Sunshine State Conference) took the first two sets in dominant fashion. NSU (6-3, 2-1 SSC) flipped the script on the 'Fish for the remainder of the match. The Sharks recovered from a 2-0 deficit to beat PBA in five sets, 3-2. The win marks NSU's first win over PBA at Rubin Arena since 2019.
Abbie Zylstra led PBA's offense with nine kills and seven digs.
Harper Stokes recorded eight kills on an efficient .368 hitting percentage.
Mary Morgan Formby and
Kaileigh Ammons tied for seven kills each. Ammons and Stokes totaled three blocks each.
Ally Schmidt notched six kills of her own.
Jayden Otto led PBA with 31 assists with seven digs and two blocks.
Payton Ahrenstorff recorded 15 digs with three assists and two aces.
A 6-0 run from PBA in the middle of the first set included kills from Zysltra and Schmidt alongside two Sailfish blocks to make it 21-13. The Sailfish offense hit a scorching .455 in the opening set with 12 kills and just two errors.
After earning a 16-14 lead, PBA kept the momentum going with two NSU errors and two aces from Ammons increased the Sailfish lead to 20-14. The Sailfish finished the set on a 4-0 run with a block from Stokes and Otto sealing the set 25-16.
NSU refused to roll over. The Sharks defense stopped PBA's efficient offense, only allowing five PBA kills in the third set. The Sailfish hit -.038 in the third set with NSU winning 25-15. The Sailfish earned a match-high five aces in the fourth set alongside four service errors from NSU, but that was not enough to put the Sharks away. The Sharks hit .400 in the fourth set to win 25-18.
After the visitors started the fifth set with a 3-0 run, the Sailfish battled back to take an 8-6 lead after a kill from Formby. The kill forced a Sharks timeout, but NSU came out of the break with five straight points, including two blocks. Two NSU attack errors kept PBA in the match, but NSU finished the set with a service ace to win the frame 15-11 and the match 3-2.
Despite starting the match efficiently on the offensive end, PBA was outhit by NSU .217 - .188. Each team's serve totaled 13 aces each.Â
The Sailfish play at home again on Friday night against Embry-Riddle. The match at Rubin Arena takes place at 7 p.m.
