WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women's volleyball team hosted Embry-Riddle in a Sunshine State Conference matchup on Friday night.
The Sailfish (5-6, 1-3 SSC) looked to get back in the win column, but they faced an Eagles squad that had won its first two SSC matches. The ERAU (9-2, 3-0 SSC) block slowed down the PBA attack. The Eagles totaled 12 blocks to help hold PBA to a .063 hitting percentage in the match. The Eagles' efforts on the defensive end led to a 3-0 win for the visitors.
Mary Morgan Formby and
Kaileigh Ammons tied for a team-high eight kills for PBA. Formby was PBA's most efficient option on offense, hitting .294. Ammons led the 'Fish with three blocks.
Taylor Nelson recorded six kills with seven digs.
Payton Ahrenstorff had a team-best 11 digs.
Jayden Otto totaled 28 assists and six digs.
After ERAU led for most of the first set a kill from Ammons and three attack errors by the Eagles allowed the Sailfish to tie the set at 19. The 'Fish failed to keep the momentum going to steal the set. The Eagles finished the set one a 6-1 run consisting of a service ace, a PBA attack error, and four kills. ERAU took the first set, 25-20.
The Eagles' front row made its presence felt in the second set. The PBA attack became frustrated after ERAU racked up seven blocks in the second set alone. The blocks made all the difference in the set as the visitors won the second set 25-22.
The Sailfish did not go down without a fight. PBA looked reenergized to start the third set. The trio of Zylstra, Nelson, and Formby gave the Sailfish an early 14-10 lead midway through the frame. The Eagles front row answered with two more blocks that seized momentum back for the visitors. ERAU rattled off a 12-2 run to end the set 25-18 and complete the sweep.
PBA competes again on Friday, Oct. 29 against Florida Southern. The match in Lakeland, Fla. takes place at 7 p.m.
