Greyhounds Stifle Sailfish Late Comeback

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- It was an exciting game that came down to the wire here at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park. PBA baseball took on the Greyhounds from Assumption University in a matchup that stretched into extra innings. The 'Fish fought hard, but fell late in the 11th.

The offense from the Sailfish was the story in this game. They managed to outhit the Greyhounds 15-12, but left 20 runners stranded on base. PBA was able to strike first in this game with two early runs off of two errors by the Assumption infielders. PBA looked to have al the momentum early, until the Greyhounds exploded for eight total runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Four of Assumptions runs came in the from of multi-RBI home runs that deflated the Sailfish morale.

PBA would fight back in the middle innings. The 'Fish nabbed one run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to cut the Greyhounds lead to just three. In the bottom of the ninth, the Sailfish would make their run.

Matthew Faranda earned a free base to begin the half inning. Matty Warren rocketed a ball to right center field to send Faranda in to score, picking up an RBI double. Elias Machado would earn the walk in his at bat and Sal Grinstead would send the ball back to right field to bring Warren in to score. The Greyhounds would walk another Sailfish batter and a costly balk by the Assumption relief pitcher would bring in Machado to tie up the game.

Assumption was able to get out of the inning and stretch the game into extras. Neither side would give up an inch in the 10th, so the game dragged on into the 11th inning. The first batter of the 11th for the Greyhounds would drive a home run down the left field line to give Assumption the go-ahead run. The Sailfish would make a bid to walk the game off in the bottom of the inning, but came up just short, losing 10-9.

PBA has a quick turnaround to get back in the win column with a road SSC series against Nova Southeastern on Mar. 3.
