ORLANDO, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team began play at the GSC-SSC South Region Crossover on Friday against West Alabama.
The Sailfish got back in the win column against the Tigers, but it wasn't easy. West Alabama pushed PBA to the limit, but the 'Fish came out on top in five sets.
Abbie Zylstra led the Sailfish attack with 14 kills, hitting .278 with two blocks.
Anna Beth Stokes and
Mary Morgan Formby tied with 11 kills each. Formby had an efficient match, hitting .476. A. Stokes also worked as a setter, totaling 16 assists and 10 digs to notch her first triple-double.
Kaileigh Ammons totaled seven aces with five kills and four blocks.
Taylor Nelson recorded 11 digs with four aces.
Jayden Otto recorded a team-best 25 assists with nine digs and four aces.
Payton Ahrenstorff led PBA with 12 digs with three aces.
Both teams traded leads throughout the first set. PBA found itself trailing 16-14, but a 7-0 run with kills by Formby, Zylstra, and Stokes, with two aces by Nelson gave the 'Fish a 21-16 lead. West Alabama cut the lead to two, but a kill from Formby and an ace from Ammons clinched a 15-19 win for PBA in the first frame.
PBA had a chance to take a 2-0 lead in the match, holding a 20-16 lead midway through the set. Serve receive plagued the Sailfish with three aces kickstarting a 6-0 run that allowed UWA to take a 22-20 lead. The 'Fish battled back as a block from
Harper Stokes and Zylstra gave the 'Fish a 25-24 lead with a chance to take the set. PBA failed to put the Tigers away, and UWA came back to win the set, 29-27 despite hitting -.034 in the set.
The Sailfish dominated the third set, hitting a match-best .583 on their way to a 25-9 win to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers stayed alive, winning a tight fourth set 26-24.
Three consecutive aces from Ammons helped the Sailfish build a 9-3 lead in the fifth set. UWA failed to recover with an ace from Otto securing the set 15-7, and sealing the match for the Sailfish.
PBA outhit the Tigers .221 - .047 in the set. The Sailfish totaled 23 aces in the match. UWA recorded 30 attack errors in the match.
The Sailfish compete again on Saturday against Union. The match begins at 10:00 a.m.
