Volleyball Takes Down Top-25 Nova Southeastern

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team returned home for a top-25 matchup on Tuesday night against No. 25-ranked Nova Southeastern.

The Sailfish (7-5, 2-3 Sunshine State Conference) squad was coming off a win against Rollins while NSU (9-3, 3-2 SSC) was fresh off a win over the former No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Tampa on Saturday. PBA turned in its best performance of the season, thriving in every facet of the game. The 'Fish swept the Sharks 3-0, concluded by a dominant win in the third set.

Abbie Zylstra led the team with 14 kills with a stellar .429 hitting percentage and six digs. Kayla Matthews was right behind her with 12 kills, hitting .259 with eight digs, a block, and an ace. Mary Morgan Formby totaled eight kills, hitting .500 from the right side with two blocks. Kaileigh Ammons converted on seven of eight attacks with three blocks. Anna Gregerson finished with five kills, hitting .455 with four blocks. Jayden Otto orchestrated a .426 team hitting percentage for the Sailfish. She totaled 38 assists with four blocks, four digs, and an ace. Lauren Cummings recorded 11 digs as libero.

Nova Southeastern totaled 11 attack errors in the first set. Five errors were due to a pestering Sailfish block, but six were unforced and allowed the 'Fish to pull away to a 23-19 lead. A kill from Zylstra brought us to set point. NSU stayed alive with a pair of kills to force a Sailfish timeout. Otto put the set away with a dump-off kill to clinch the 25-22 set win for PBA.

Despite hitting an efficient .379 in the first set, the Sailfish improved in the second set hitting .405.  PBA got ahead early and kept the Sharks at arm's length for most of the set. A kill from Formby and an ace by Cummins put PBA ahead 20-14. Two kills and an ace from Matthews made it 23-16 down the stretch. NSU clawed back to cut the deficit to two but kills from Matthews and Zylstra secured the 25-23 win, giving the 'Fish a 2-0 lead.

The third set was completely controlled by the Sailfish. PBA hit a sizzling .500 in the set. A 10-1 run with kills from Gregerson, Formby, and Ammons put the Sailfish ahead 18-6. PBA eliminated any idea of an NSU comeback with a kill from Formby and another ace from Cummings sealing a 25-15 win in the set, completing the sweep.

PBA outhit the Sharks .426 - .178 in the match. The Sailfish recorded a 67 percent side-out percentage. The Sharks totaled 19 attack errors compared to just eight for PBA. The 'Fish attack kept the visitors guessing as NSU only mustered two blocks in the match.

The Sailfish look to keep the momentum rolling against Saint Leo on Friday night. The Match at Rubin Arena takes place at 7 p.m.
