Volleyball Wins in Five Against Saint Leo

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team hosted Saint Leo Friday night at Rubin Arena.

The Sailfish entered the night coming off a big win over No. 25 Nova Southeastern on Tuesday. Saint Leo entered the night on a three-match losing streak. PBA came out flat and dropped the first set but bounced back to take a 2-1 lead. Saint Leo stayed alive by winning the fourth set, 25-21, forcing the fifth set. The Sailfish pulled out a dramatic fifth-set victory, 16-14, winning the match, 3-2.

Abbie Zylstra led PBA with 20 kills, hitting .283 from the outside with seven digs and a block. Mary Morgan Formby finished with 10 kills, hitting an efficient .409 with four digs and a block. Kayla Matthews added seven kills and seven digs. Anna Gregerson recorded seven kills with three blocks. Kaileigh Ammons had six kills with six digs and five blocks. Jayden Otto totaled 39 assists with 15 digs and four kills. Lauren Cummings recorded a career-high 20 digs as libero.

The Sailfish were still riding high off Tuesday's win and started today's match a little flat in the first set. Two runs in the middle of the set by Saint Leo gave the Lions a 23-15 lead. A couple of unforced errors by the visitors gave PBA some momentum, but the 'Fish failed to overcome the deficit. The Lions won the first set, 25-18.

PBA's offense awoke in the second set. The Sailfish had their best set of the night, hitting .417 in the frame. The hosts took control quickly with an ace from Cummings giving the 'Fish a 13-7 lead. Another ace from Ammons made it a 17-11 advantage for the Sailfish. The 'Fish left no room for the Lions to come back, winning the second set, 25-16.

The Sailfish kept their momentum at the start of the third set. PBA opened with an 8-0 run, including six errors from the Saint Leo attack. The Lions came back to cut the deficit to four points, but the Sailfish secured the set win, 25-18.

Saint Leo flipped the script in the fourth set. The Lions started the set with a 10-2 lead as PBA struggled with its serve receive. The Sailfish slowly worked their way back, eventually taking a 19-18 lead after a kill from Ammons. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, Saint Leo ended the set on a 7-2 run including three unforced errors from the 'Fish that allowed the Lions to stay alive.

After the Sailfish grabbed an early lead in the fifth set, Saint Leo battled back to tie the set at 11. A service error by the Lions gave PBA a 12-11 lead, but an SLU kill, and a PBA error put the Lions ahead 13-12. Zylstra tied the set with a big kill coming out of a Sailfish timeout. PBA's backs were against the wall after an SLU kill made it 14-13, but the Sailfish rattled off three straight points. Another kill from Zylstra, a block from Gregerson, and an ace from Zylstra allowed PBA to steal the 16-14 set win and 3-2 match win.

The Sailfish outhit Saint Leo, .236 - .182. Saint Leo totaled 29 attack errors compared to 19 for PBA.

The Sailfish look to continue their winning streak on Saturday against Florida Tech. The match at Rubin Arena starts at 4 p.m.
